Being charged extra for wanting to pay upfront (rather than by direct debit)

I think I've heard it all now. AA were charging me €69 per year for Breakdown Assist. Great, I thought. They then told me I'd be charged by direct debit each month. No way, I thought, having recently being overcharged by over €100 each month for two months by Meteor (until I cancelled my direct debit), money wrongly taken from my account which I didn't get refunded for a month each time. To intensify my opposition to direct debits, I have recently read that "Lenders will not consider applications where there are unpaid direct debits." when considering a mortgage application.

I said I'd prefer to pay you for the year upfront. I was then told that the cost would be €81. They were charging me €12 for wanting to pay them the year's fee upfront. Most businesses, I would have thought, would be delighted to be paid upfront and not charge you a premium for doing so.

The world is gone upside down.
