Convertible suitable for Ireland?

Hi! I hope you are all well!
I am looking at getting a 2nd hand car in the next year or so.
I like to carry my bike and surfboard, along with luggage..as I do trips around Ireland quite often.
My head says Ford Focus, Passat, Octavia, Mondeo or Accord.
My heart says Audi A4 Cabriolet, or BMW 325 Cabriolet.

I love the idea of having a convertible, but given Irish weather and my having to transport my board and bike, are they impractical?
Would I be better getting the focus, Passat etc...

Another factor is, that I park under sycamore trees which drop sap onto anything underneath in the summer!

    Thanks a mil!

Oc course they are impractical here, but that's not why we buy cars is it?? Perhaps a hardtop like an Eos might be a compromise, better everyday than a soft top, and when the sun shines, drop the roof.

And I'd say that's all it is. A nice idea.

What you need is an estate car with a roof-rack if not an MPV or van. My brother is into the surfing and he's regretting buying a coupe - it's really not compatible with regular weekending and trips to the coast. He's trying to sell the coupe now and is looking at getting a small camper VW Transporter conversion.

If you're a good looking girl go for a convertible.

If you're a balding middle aged man then please don't.

A camper would be your best like the one posted above especially if you do a lot of surfing. How were you planning on carrying your surfboard in a cabrio?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,057 ✭✭✭Arequipa

Thankfully i still have a full head of hair!
The boot space in the A4 cabriolet seems better, but would it carry a bike and/or surfboard?

A mate of mine has a Passat estate with darkened rear windows; he travels to West coast & if no accomodation, sleeps on a mattress in the back?!

I would have thought this was a no-brainer for wave chasers tbh.

Definitely an estate if you're in a rush to get there and not worried about a bit of cramped sleeping.

If you plan on cruising along at a reasonable pace get a van far more comfortable enough room for a few bodies in the back and set up an awning for the bbq.

I drove around Australia in an 81 Hiace with a pop top and a few thrown together storage boxes, it was possibly one of the best trips I've ever done. It's nice to have a bit of space getting changed after surfing and there's not a whole lot in the back of an estate. Mates I traveled with had an estate and more often than not they'd end up in the van.

Best of luck with either way. :)

Get yourself a Subaru Forester - it'll hold all your stuff and they have a huge sunroof. ;)

Thanks so much for the replies!
An estate would be an option; not too keen on a van as i only surf every 2/3 months: hike & cycle weeks in between!

I currently drive a 00Vectra 1.6: would like to get something with more powerful engine & bit more flash!!

    Thanks again!

I think the 525d stands out for me or the Audi estate!
I will probably spend €10k on the car...

Are Donedeal reliable for buying a car?
Presumably you can follow up with a test drice or get a mechanic to give the car a look over?

Any point in sourcing a higher spec model of for eg the 530d up in Northern Ireland?

    Cheers!

It doesn't matter what site you buy from there are chancers on them all. If a seller won't allow a test drive or mechanic to check out a car walk away. Some may have issues with letting you drive without having the asking price in their hand or insurance issues, but if you can't get a test drive then don't buy

I wouldn't buy any diesel from up North, too much washed diesel sold up there. Look on mainland UK and make sure it's cheaper after all costs are added together.

Forget Coupés - and the boots on cabrio's are non-existent !!

The answer is, as pointed out, a Van/Camper, or an estate.

A van, you know what that looks like - An estate, well that's one in my sig right there !! :)

The 325 with a hard top can easily carry a roof rack/surfboard or you can just let the roof down and sit it in. Go for the convertible and follow your heart;) Do mind the tractor fans:p

Thing is, the 325 with a hard top is no longer a convertible..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,057 ✭✭✭Arequipa

Apologies for all the questions: would a hardtop handle as well as a standard car? I hear, that not having a fixed roof alters the balance of the car?!
In terms of storage in the boot, would the hard top use much of this space?

I like the idea of getting a high spec model: leather seats, air con, cruise control etc: it seems that some models get a higher spec finish in the UK?!

Convertibles are inherently less rigid, but you won't notice much difference unless you drive hard.
    Arequipa wrote: »

A removable hardtop won't fit in the boot - it'll need to be stored in a garage when not in use. A folding hardtop will leave you with little enough boot space when retracted.

That's all down to the tastes/wallet of the original owner.

I own the Audi A4 convertible, its no good for holding a surf board or bike. Plus when youve the roof down you lose more around 30% of your boot.

Its a great car, and I wouldnt change it for the world, but I dont have biking or surfing requirements.

Go for the audi or bmw estate, much more suited to your needs, oh and get the sunroof as the compromise for the cabriolet :)

I wouldnt be inclined to put any weight on a hard top (jokes aside) You could do more damage to the mechanisms than good.

So no, im all for following your dream and that. But a convertible to lug watersports equipment over to the west coast of ireland.

Youd be banging your head off a wall man.

Just imagine...driving the little sideroads along the atlantic ocean, that blonde in the seat of an Audi convertible, wind in your hair + rain + seaspray!!

Think having a convertible, means compromising on space and luggage capac..

Any issues with security & a soft-top: ie little scobies taking a knife to the roof?
I park my car currently under sycamore trees: they drop a sap onto car dyring summer! Dont like the idea of cleaning off a soft roof...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,731 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Never had a bother with scobies, think even them like a nice car. Nothing to watch out for only birds ****.

If your looking for one, see can you find one with a hard top for the winter and a wind deflector (you'll hardly notice the wind on the motorway with a deflector).

OP, a suggestion is to buy whatever convertable you like........fill yer boots........then, put a towbar on it, and buy a surfboad trailer. It'll be well under 750kg so you'll not need a licence to tow one......

Stay away from 2 liter Audis and VW diesels of that year at all costs!
Chain to the balancing shafts can snap, balancing shafts drive oil pump (shaft for oilpump also too soft and short), leaving your engine without oil whilst driving along, result knackered engine and turbo, multi thosaund €€€€ bill.
And there seem to have been some even worse problems with the 2 liter bimmers.

Personally, I wouldn't own a convertible if I didn't have a garage. If nothing else, the roof will just last longer, being protected, not to mention the vandalism aspect...or the bird**** aspect........or the sap aspect.........

If I wanted to source a high spec BMW or Audi in Northern Ireland/the Uk what approved, professional companies or websites would you go to?

IMO you're better off buying privately, although you could look at the car supermarkets. Don't restrict your search to the UK, cars are often just as well-priced (and specified) here.

I'll not be a grammer nazi like some to your response, but I agree, its not an attractive looking solution, but it is a practical solution, the OP gets to buy and enjoy a nice tasty convertable without restriction, and has the flexibility of having a trailer to attach when they want to go surfing occasionally.

    The Wrangler looks cool alrite!!

My 1.6 vectra 2000 costs me over €500 in tax a year.. For example with 2.5/ 3 litre BMW: is there a cut off year (due to less emissions) when the car tax drops a bit & becomes reasonably affordable?!
    Defo last question!!

Nope . It gets worse. A pre 2008 car of 3 litres will cost you about €1800 a year to tax.

Unless you're buying a post 2008 car, that is.

    What's your budget btw ?
