Small headlight bulb gone - NCT fail

Somebody might be able to help, headlight has three bulbs, and a small one - neither the dipped or the full beams - has blown. Will this fail the NCT? I plan on replacing it of course, just need to get time and don't know whether I will before the NCT comes up

    Thanks

My wife's car failed on sides recently, although the issue was colour -- one of the angel eyes went on her bimmer and it failed over to half-lit indicators.

yes , definitely get it changed. Had to get my car rechecked because one side light bulb was very dim. needed a new bulb.

its just a visual inspection and wont cost you but have all the lights working to save you the hassle. should only take a few mins to replace

Is it the sidelight ? Or a foglight ?
Sidelight definite fail. Foglight depends on whether they check it or not. As far as I can see they will only check front fogs if they are separate to the headlamp unit (eg. fitted in the bumper or bolted on like a spotlamp).

Any bulb not working will fail, I know the bulb you are refering to, its the side or parking bulb and yes it will fail on that, mine did back in May, its a visual inspection fail and would not cost anything to retest. But it should only take a couple of minutes to change.

Cheers for the responses lads, will find time to change it! It's a right bugger though, have to take out the whole light unit and then screw off the back of the unit! Anyway, will get around to it!

The night before my last NCT I noticed one of my side lamps was dead and it passed anyway. Maybe he just didn't notice.

Im actually getting annoyed with the amount of threads on here for nct fail stuff.

Just seems to be a lot lately. ....

As usual, the answer is in the NCT Manual, in this case p.46.

    SIDE LAMPS (Front Position Lamps)

    Method of Testing

    Side Lamps

Check that the two lamps showing a white light are fitted symmetrically to the front of the vehicle and:

    1. when illuminated are clearly visible.
    2. are securely fixed.

    Reasons for failure:

1 Missing or not clearly visible.
    2 Lens broken or missing.
    3 Not working or faulty.
    4 Not white in colour.
    5 Not fitted symmetrically.
6 Not of the same dimensions and intensity.
    7 Insecurely mounted.
    8 Contains water / moisture.
9 Switch does not operate correctly.

We still don't know if it's a side light or fog light bulb.
Some cars (Fiat Punto, Citroen C5, etc.) have front fog lights built into the main headlamp assembly.....the NCT manual does not mention/illustrate these, only fog lights that are separate from the headlamp.
The OP said it is a 'small bulb', could be a H1, H2 or any of the smaller size halogen bulbs.

As long as OP hasn't come back to say what car it is so we can figure out what bulb he's on about it's just a guessing game.
I was assuming it's one of those with a tiny parking bulb incorporated into the headlight housing. Sometimes boyracers put blue tint lights in them.

Didn't realise the thread was generating as many responses

To start, perhaps a thread can be created for any NCT questions and you can make it a sticky?

Didn't realise there was an NCT manual, never thought about it really. That's useful though, maybe link this in the first post of the NCT sticky I suggest above?

Car is a hyundai coupe gen 3

and I'm struggling to find an image of the headlight that's up close enough to actually point out the bulb

I'll take a photo of my own tomorrow and throw it up here to avoid confusion

Sorry to bring up old thread,I am just back from the nct test.my car failed for a front headlight bulb. The tester said I have 28 days to get it sorted, however he said it's €28 for a re check, I thought it's free for this?

Yeah I checked it before I left the house, literally a 10 minute drive and it must of blown when he turned it on,just my luck!it passed everything else. I'll go to halfords and get someone to fit it for me tomorrow and get it retested straight away!

    I'm raging :(

I was just doing a bit of googling there on info on how to do it. Its a 2005 for fiesta, seemingly I will have to take the unit out to get at the bulb

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,375 ✭✭✭bri007

i dont have the correct screwdriver to do it, just looked at it there

I can't remember the correct name but try a flat head sometimes they will fit.
Be careful not to destroy the head of screw. They are a very easy light to deal with. Have a look where side light is then go to rear and see if you can see little lamp holder. I am so use to doing this it's like I'm on auto and should be able to explain better.

is called a torx head,, herself has an 05 fiesta and the grille needs to be removed first,,,on ours it just clips out on the top and pulled more or less off the front bumper. then its i think 2 torx head screws,, and the headlamp sits on a little tit or spud that you will have to lever it off gently,,,hope this helps,,

I dont think i have a torx head handy, ill ask around and see if i can get one. Seems tricky enough for a bulb, typical ford :) Thanks for the info and help

Just bring it to a motor factors to fit it if you don't have the tools. Halfords ain't THAT bad, they just get bet around on message boards because it makes people think they know their **** to say they are ****. They fit hundreds of bulbs, I'm sure they can manage a fiesta.
