Peugeot 206 Overheating

Hi everyone, I hope this is the right place for this problem.

I have a Peugeot 206 and for the last while it's been overheating, especially in traffic. The needle flies up into the red, but turning on the heater will bring it down, which was ok.

But I was having the problem a lot more in the last week so a retired mechanic friend of mine suggested removing the thermostat until I could get it to a garage, so I did that.

But today, while driving, the needle shot way up over the red and the STOP light came on.
I pulled in and popped the bonnet and noticed I had no water, so I topped it up.

(I forgot to mention the car has been making a funny whistling noise whenever the temperature goes to 90.)

I've had a head gasket replaced in the last 12 months, so I doubt it's that, and it can't be the thermostat as it wasn't in my car today and yet I still had this problem.

I also had a new timing belt put in a few months ago.

    What do you think?

I'm thinking water pump but I've been reading conflicting things online.

    Thanks!

PS I know it's my own fault for buying a Peugeot but we all make mistakes :D:D

If its loosing coolant then the first thing you need to check is where the coolant is going...leaking internally/externally etc.

The cooling fans can also fail on these....the fan should cut in around 90degs C
if its making a whistling noise above 90 degs then the pressure/coolant in the system maybe blowing out tru the reservoir cap....This needs to be checked also and have alook around for external leaks...?

Peugeots aren't the only cars the overheat if theres a problem somewhere...:D
