Hi all. Maybe someone might be able to help me with this and whats best to do. Basically, I am insured and my 18 year old sister is insured with me as a name driver, she has just started her driving lessons and only has her provisional since April, I now have to take her off my insurance as I was bought a new car. I spoke to the insurance and no one will insure her on her own. My mother drives a 131 toyota so again we are unsure of insuring her on this and my brother has a 00 seat but its a 1.9 turbo diesel, so as a starting car is a bit too much. What essentially I am wondering is, can my mother take out a second policy, or are we better off to wait until she has her driving test done to insure her? Thanks in advance for any help!:)

I presume you are trying to insure her on your old car? Why wont anyone insure her on it? Or is it that the cost is too much?

Your mother can take out a second policy on the car provided she is the registered owner of the car. Depending on her insurer she might not get to mirror her NCB, so it probably going to work out expensive to insurer her with zero NCB and then add your sister as a named driver. You also have the issue that its not legal for a named driver to be the principle driver of the car...

Yes sorry it is to insure her on the old car, they said to me when I tried to get an estimated quote of any description that no one would insure her because of her age and only holding a provisional license with little driving experience. I seem to be caught any way I try to insure her.

I doubt that is true to be honest; get out the phonebook and ring around insurers and brokers (make sure you ring, dont use online quotes) and Id be amazed if you dont find several companies willing to quote her. Unless the car is something ridiculous like a Japanese performance car or something?

Chill won't do it but as a broker they should be able to advise you on what to do - phone Brittons in donegal - they are an experienced broker that will advise you - It wont be cheap but it's not impossible.

Going down the route of insuring in yourr mums name - insurance companies have coped on to this and are cracking down on it big time now
