36h hubs for Campag

I am going to be building a bomb proof tub set for the winter and I have trouble finding any decent 36hole hubs. Ideally I wanted Chris King, but I don't want to spend that amount of money, second choice is Campagnolo Record hubs, but I can only find a front one in 36holes. I 've seen some miche, but for some reason I am not really keen in that company. Any suggestions that don't break the bank? And for once.. weight is not really a problem :pac:

What rims are you using? FWIW I don't think you need to go above 32h for winter wheels but it might depend on how much winter-weight you plan to put on.

Thanks, that's interesting, I didn't know novatec made 36H hubs.

I am not going to put any crazy weight on it so even 28 would work, but I already had the rims and they are 36H, they are the campag omega strada xl.

Hope Pro Three -they were what I was going to use (not in 36h) before you 'encouraged' me to go carbon...

Dara built me up 32h wheels on the above hubs, seemed happy enough with the quality of the hubs

Yeap tubs. Until I have my first puncture on the top of the sally gap while it's -5 outside.. I don't think I ll change my attitude towards them lol.

I glued my first tubs the other day....easier than fitting a continental clincher to a mavic rim....provided I had a pre-glued tub with me, I'd rather puncture on tubs than on a clincher....

Yeah, but only once. I've had some 3 puncture days. They're rare but they happen. And I don't fancy carrying a rake of pre-glued tubs. For me the tub argument boils down to weight and once you've got 36 spokes that argument is lost.

I'm experimenting with wide profile clinchers at the moment. Just ordered a set of Velocity A23 rims that I'm hoping will give me some winter cushiness with 25mm tyres and are reputed to give some of the handling/comfort characteristics of tubs. We'll see.

I do genuinely admire Astra's commitment to the road less travelled when it comes to component choice. It's great to see someone prepared to experiment so much.

Just to slightly sidetrack this a tad.Have Campy stopped making hubs to be sold seperatly as ,with the exception of record, hubs seem to be very hard to come by.
Was thinking of doing the same as yourself but with standard tyres and tubes and was gonna go for Miche hubs

go for latex tubes too, they really make a noticable difference but need to be topped up every day. they seem to take away road roughness/vibrations when paired with a high tpi tyre

Oh I've been on latex for a couple of years now. Love 'em. Teamed with Veloflex 320tpi tyres they're PLUSH. I'm looking forward to what they feel like on wider rims (as well as the A23s I have a set of Kinlin xr279 rims being built up and they're 23mm wide too).

That's part of the reason I'm dubious about tubs - if I were riding tubs I'd be tempted to go for something with a bit more kevlar to lessen the cost of punctures (Conti Sprinters seem popular) and that would leave me with tubs that are actually less comfy and have more cRR than my current clincher set-up. I could of course go for Veloflex tubs but I baulk at the price.

Anyway, despite appearances is is not my goal to hijack this thread and turn it into yet another tub v clinchers debate. Each to their own.

Quick tangent for the thread (sorry Astramonti, hope you don't mind): are people using 23mm latex tubes with 25mm tyres or have you found 25mm latex tubes? I've only ever seen latex tubes which are rated for up to 23mm, so I'm curious if people are using those with 25mm tyres without any problems.

Only ever used them with 22mm or 23mm tyres (Veloflex and Conti 4000Ss). I use 25mm Contis on my training wheels but they have butyl tubes. Never tried to use the latex tubes with larger tyres and would be fearful that they'd fail once pushed beyond their stated size - latex doesn't expand evenly like butyl, a balloon will form in one spot instead.

What tyres are you planning on running on these wheels, Astra? All those spoke and that rim sort of demand Vittoria Pavés. That would be sweet.

cool, Im racing on kinlin xc279,michelin latex and pro4. the 23mm michelin measures 24.5mm wide on the rim, 23mm gp4000s measures 25.5mm!

Interesting. What do you think of the rims? I tried a veloflex tyre on one before dropping them in to be spoked up and it didn't seem appreciably wider than the rim itself - seems to form that single toroidal shape that the boffins are all shilling these days. I didn't get the calliper out though. I can't remember whether it was a 22mm or 23mm veloflex but they always run a good bit narrower that Conti etc. For some reason they all lie about how wide and how heavy their tyres are.

I was thinking about the FMB, but also these dugast but probably I ll go with the veloflex Paris-Roubaix again as the ride quality is amazing and they are much cheaper.

they are working ok, gonna build a 24h front and currently running 28 f&r, seem plenty stiff, tho I have high flange hubs and 3.2mm X 1mm aero spokes. the rim measures 22.5mm wide but when inflated the edge of the rim expands out so the width changes to 23.5mm.

the gp4000s is the most aero shaped tyre when fitted to wide rims, but its rolling resistance is higher than a good few other race tyres. the 23mm gp tt limited edition measures 24.5mm on xc279 but has less rubber so isnt the same aero shape.

a gp4000s for the front would be a good idea, rolling resistance and weight of the front tyre doesnt matter as much as for the rear
