What does a first therapy session entail?

    I am considering seeing a mental health professional, and have a couple of questions:

    1) What usually happens the first time you sit down with a therapist? Do you get asked loads of questions, or do you have to detail all your problems, etc.?

    2) How do you choose what therapist to see? Obviously I could get a doctor's referral, but I don't know any doctors around where I live (my GP, who I barely know anyway is in another part of the country)

    I'm aware of some places offering "affordable" services, and with multiple counsellors available. That could be handy for getting a suitably matched professional, but does "affordable" imply low quality?

    I would recommend interviewing a number of therapists in order to find someone you are comfortable with.

    A 'good' therapist is at the very least someone you are comfortable around.

    There is little point seeing someone with a barrage of letters after their name if you don't connect with them

    From my own experience I found the GP route very effective. Firstly, I booked a consultation with my GP and explained my ongoing problems, he asked compulsory questions about my general well being (sleep/eating patterns etc). Using this information he diagnosed and implemented a treatment plan. The treatment plan involved medications and a referral to a psychotherapist. Don't be worried about seeing your GP, I was petrified but later came to realise they are empathetic and will make it as non intrusive as possible.

    The first consulation with a psychotherapist will usually involve just a general history, like I stated, they are professionals and will be aware of how you may be feeling. I'd advise you not to hesitate in seeking help, it's better to treat these conditions early so you can move on with your life.
