This is what I started with, still fly it:
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16542__Bixler_v1_1_EPO_1400mm_RTF_Mode_2_Throttle_Left_Radio_.html

Comes with everything you need, though you'll find it works even better with a bigger battery (3s 2200mah) that you can get later on.

This one is similar and recommended by a lot of people for beginners:
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8359__AXN_Floater_Jet_w_Servo_Motor_ESC_EPO_PNF.html

    see this video-
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EfomKG7w18
same guy has really detailed assembly and setup videos for it on youtube.

If you buy that one you'll need to buy radio gear and batter separately - this is really good value:
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8338__Hobby_King_2_4Ghz_4Ch_Tx_Rx_V2_Mode_2_.html

    And 3s 2000mah battery:
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8933__Turnigy_2200mAh_2S_20C_Lipo_Pack.html

    And a charger:
    http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__7028__Turnigy_Accucel_6_50W_6A_Balancer_Charger_w_accessories.html

Which works out only a little dearer.

thanks very much for your reply.I'm going to go with the second set up you recommended.just one thing.
is there much building involved and is it hard to do?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭civdef

It's not too hard, but there are some excellent guides, these videos are probably the best:

ok for what you recommended its 210 dollars.now do you know if this is coming from the uk or hong kong?or america?
because if its coming from anywhere outside uk ill be screwed with customs.
    thanks.

Those links are from Hong Kong, but hobbyking have warehouses in Germany, Netherlands and UK - I find shipping cheapest from NL, prices a little higher, but like you say, no customs to be paid.

Here's the AXN from the NL warehouse:

    Charger:

Batteries and radios currently out of stock from Hobbyking NL, but similar available from Giant Shark in UK:

There is always the radian which I recommended to a few here the last few years. I have 2 here the last 4 or 5 years, and they are still going. Just another option as well as the other good recommendations given already.

Having an aircraft suitable for a person starting off is a good start. Even better if you can get assistance from someone experienced for the first flights if you have not really flown before. A plane suitable for beginners won't eliminate crashing for a beginner, it just makes learning easier with assistance, than a more aerobatic faster aircraft.

yea i learned my lesson with the mini super cub.they(planes in general) are not as easy to fly as you might think.or maybe its me i dont know :D but its an expensive mistake to crash one beyond repair.
im going to do it right this time, ive gone about contacting a model flying club as well. and the radian does look good.
but i really want one thats rtf.i dont want the hassle of building.not for now anyway.

would the transmitter and or reciever from the mini super cub work with the radian or the bixler or the axn floater?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭civdef

    What make was the cub?

It might allright - when you Buy a "PNF" (Plug 'n Fly) or "PNP" (Plug 'n Play) kit it means all the bits are there except battery and radio, so if you already have a radio transmitter and receiver, this might suit you. If we know the make of the cub we can say more.

I know all about that lesson myself, I though I could give it a go myself when I started, with the standard outcome. That was in 1988. Rebuilt, tried again, same result. Then got the assistance and that made crashes very rare from then on.

The radian is a great one, which I used mostly for aerial photos and video, and so is the bixler from what I hear, but I never flew it myself. The one I fly most often now is a cularis, for the last 3 years.

But the radian I think is a great starter one.

In my opinion anyway, you'd be better getting the full range radio that comes with the radian RTF setup. 1300 feet sounds like long range, but that would be the outer range limit, with likely glitches etc well inside that. We often flew the radian to more than 500 metres away in line of sight, which would be probably 1700 feet.

yes and in my mind id rather just go and buy everything and start again.and going by what im seeing online the radian is proving easier to buy than the other set up at the moment.being low on stock etc.

your not in limerick/munster region by any chance are you?lol or would you be confident enough to teach someone?

I have had a few call here for assistance with flying, with planes and choppers, but I'm in navan. Teaching someone to fly the radian is easy enough, and its easy to learn on. But definitely get someone to assist, as it will certainly be a crash, even for the easiest if aircraft to fly.

What did you think of the bixler? I was thinking of getting one and setting it up for night flying.

I found it really great for learning to fly, though I changed the crappy prop that came with it to a 6x4 and used a 2200mah battery instead of the 1300mah it came with - theres actually a pile of big washers in the nose to balance the 1300, when they come out the 2200 is ideal. I've since rigged it up for FPV and it worked deadly for that, current project is fitting an Ardupilot to it and trying it on autonomous mode.
The benefits I see it having are docile behaviour, reasonable payload and it's cheap!

Like Bruthal says, thats a fairly short range / low end transmitter, you'd probably be better off with a new one. The link Bruthal posted has some good offers at present and their postage to here is reasonable.

If your in limerick it might be worth visiting here. There about 5 mins from ennis and I am sure they would teach you how to fly.I was looking at their site there and cant find the radian only the radian pro which I am not sure if its good for a beginner. The might order it in for you do if you ring them .

I got the radian as my first plane after recommendations here and tried to fly it myself and made sh1t of it after my first flight.I then got a parkzone t28 micro and flew it over high grass and when I crashed it caused no damage to the plane and when I was confident enough with flying moved on to the radain,I now have two radians one for the day and one for the night :D.

Yea I like the powered glider type aircraft these days. I have a p51 mustang nitro plane since around 2000, and the odd time that comes out, it seems like an absolute rocket with flying much slower gliders all the time now.

The mini super cub can be had for €50 delivered to Ireland from the online retailer Conrad (http://www.conrad.de/ce/ProductDetail.html?hk=WW1&insert=U0&utm_source=idealo&utm_medium=deeplink&utm_content=dl_article&utm_campaign=pvgl&WT.mc_id=affiliate_zanox_produktdaten_preisvergleich_idealo&productcode=553873&zanpid=1806847651904593920).

It is ready to fly and I had a few good flights with it until a bad crash, destroying the motor shaft and some other parts. It's probably not the best beginner plane out there but then it is also hard to argue with the price.
