Where to wire in DRL?

I'm thinking strongly about adding daytime running lights to my '07 Land Cruiser, to come on automatically whenever the ignition switch is in the "run" position. Any pointers as to where I'd start looking for a wire to tap into under the bonnet? It's disturbingly tidy in there. :)

A relay in the Fuse or ECU box is usually a good bet. You are looking for a switched 12v signal, if you google that term and your vehicle Im sure you will find something.

Alternatively, wire them direct into your parking lights and simply use them to turn on or off DRLs. The fancier DRLs auto-dim when your main lights come on, this will work via a wire into to harness for the main beams.

Yeah, I've been poking around in the fuse box under the bonnet. It seems that all the fuses in there are wired straight from battery, which sort of makes sense, I guess. I can't find anything obvious that's ignition switched, and I don't really want to bugger around too much with the ECU.

The idea is not to have to remember to turn them on. I divide my driving time between the Cruiser and Her Indoors's BMW. The BMW turns its headlights on and off automatically without a fuss, so I often forget to turn on my dipped lights when driving the Cruiser, and I hate driving unlit.

I'm coming to the conclusion that I'll need to tap into a fuse in the cabin, probably the ciggie lighter or similar, and bring a wire through the firewall, which I was hoping not to have to do.

On my van, if I wasn't bothered going through the bulkhead, I'd go for the windscreen washer or window wiper motor for the switch. Take your power then straight from the fuse box on the battery.

    Hey OB.

I wonder if you could tap a +ve supply from one of the circuits that come on at Position II of the ignition directly into the +ve side of the low beam headlamp relay?

Would be the simplest thing to do!

Unless of course you wish to put a solar sensor onto the low beam circuit... and then leave it on all the time! :-)
