Looking for New Bike. It's been a while. North Dublin

Just got back from Northern Italy where everyone seems to cycle a lot. Gave me the taste to cycle again, more for leisure than anything and maybe to cycle to work (im self employed).

Was looking for a mountain bike, or something similar, reliable and comfortable. It's been maybe 8 years since I purchased a bike, but is it just me, or have the prices rocketed during the recession? What would have cost 200-250 seems to cost over 600 since I last looked. Am I missing something here? Could probably get one via the OH with the cycle to work scheme, but don't want to screw the system, even though she has my credits and I would be cycling to work (sometimes).

Any advice on what to look for and where to look. Hoping to get one today or tomorrow, all going well. I'm expecting to spend around €600, maybe a bit more.

Bought a Giant Roam 1 in Duffys in Donaghmede SC. Ad cost €799 and I got 10% discount. Seems like a well built bike.

Just had it out for a quick, 10 minute test run and she seems like a good bike. But there is a problem with the on/off suspension. Turned it on (little dial on the fork) when I was crossing a green area and then locked when I reached the cycle path. Tried to do the same on my return, but the unlock feature did not engage. It was in the correct position, but it would not work. I tried it several times, but no matter what position the dial is in, the suspension is locked. I will be bringing it back tomorrow to get sorted. Anyone any ideas?

Thanks for all the help, there was so much information and useful advice given to me in this thread. Not a single person tried to sell me anything either. I'll be sure to return here regularly.

Why would anyone bother? You already bought a bike within a couple of hours of your original post, after which any advice would have been meaningless.

You bought a bike within 4 hours of your original post, when the majority of people would have been in work. Most people also wouldn't have a clue what you're talking about because it sounds specific to the model bike you own.
