    Hi
im thinking of switching my 04 passat 130bhp tdi 6 speed diesel for a 4wd version of the audi or passat,

What I want to know is would ye recommend it or am I just drawing trouble on myself going 4wd?

would the 4wd give me better handling?

this is something along the lines im considering

He wants at least 2.5 grand too much. Also lady owner in general means possible problems due to mainteance neglection and technical ignorance.

The 4wd system used in those A4s and Passats is a very strong and reliable setup so you won't be getting any extra trouble from it in that respect. You will lose a bit in terms of acceleration and mpg compared to the fwd car but as a driving experience there is no comparison between the 2. You will find it very hard to go back to a fwd car having owned a quattro that's for sure.

The price of the one you linked to is realistic, suggestions that it is €2.5k over-priced are ill-informed at best, you simply do not pick up Sport spec quattro A4 diesels for a couple of grand, even when they are 10 years old with 144k miles on them.

That's a nice car in the Ad and I also agree that its priced relatively realisticaly (although she looks like a smokey one with the soot darkened rear left tail light)

While Quattro would indeed be nice, I wouldnt go out of my way to sell my car (A4 1.9 TDI Sport FWD) just to get the Quattro version.
(even if I was in your situation with Passat 1.9 TDI 130)

I mean dont get me wrong, if i was in the market for an A4 TDI now with no car at all and I came across two equally good A4's FWD/Quattro, i would actually pay the premium for the quattro - but having found a very decent FWD A4 TDI I wouldnt now dream of selling it just purely for the the sake of quattro.

Yes, the handling will be better but in everyday driving it will be negligible unless youre driving the car to its limits. Having severly snowy winters again, shouldnt be much of an argument for switching over.

On the flip side with the quattro, you get a smaller fuel tank 61L as opposed to 68L, thirstier car, higher manintenance costs and a bit slower also.

If your only motivation for changing is "quattro" then stick with the devil you know.

If you wanted to change to a V6 TDI Quattro or then that would be a completely different story :D

You'll notice the difference between a 4wd car and a 2wd one in almost all types of driving conditions. Try the M7 on a rainy day in a 4wd car with decent tyres....

Also there are almost zero maintenance costs on the torsen system in A4's and passats bar a change of the rear diff oil every 80/100k.

    +1 would go 2.5tdi

+2 on that,i had one as my previous car.No rocket ship but definitely possess the extra horses and power band to get the best out of the Quattro.

I am on my 3rd 4wd VAG car 1 torsen and 2 Haldex based and i would find it very hard to go back to 2wd and nearly impossible to go back to 2wd VAG.

My last car was an A4 2.5 TDi quattro tiptronic. Best driving car I've ever owned.
The auto box on some Audi's is a CVT type that can cause problems, but the Quattro's are fitted with a 5 speed Tiptronic box that is generally sound (as long as you change the gearbox oil every 40,000 miles).
Changed it for a 2.5 allroad quattro, which is essentially an A6 avant with beefed up pneumatic variable suspension. Great car with lots of toys and feels like it could climb a mountain, but the A4 was tighter and felt indestructible.
A quattro with a bit of power is an awesome drive.
