Back to basics - info for beginners

Hi,

Are there any good resources online for anyone new to, or thinking of taking up writing? I don't know what I don't know in terms of writing or being a writer, so hoping I can be enlightened here. I've read some things online but it's hard to know what is good advice and what's not.

I'm thinking of do's and don'ts, explanations and a bit of detail on various concepts like writing styles, character development, structuring a story etc.

Also, back to basic guides on grammar and structuring sentences correctly would be helpful. (I never paid much heed in school to that )

I've looked through this forum a bit and I didn't find anything like it, but if there are any good threads to point out I'd appreciate it.

www.writing.ie. I consider this pretty much the definitive site for Irish writers. It has loads of resources, including articles on the craft of writing.
Otherwise, try the online versions of Writing Magazine and Writer's Forum Magazine. They blend writing market advice and advice on the craft of writing.
