NCT Engine Light - Fail?

    Hi folks,

Read through a few threads here and there seems to be some debate about engine lights for the NCT. A friends car has the usual Audi spanner (For a service interval) and this engine light:

Is that a fail? No brake, ABS etc lights on. Should probably add it is a Petrol car.

Afaik An engine light being on in a diesel will fail the NCT, but will not fail if it's petrol

    For the record, its Petrol.

I can't find any mention of a fail for an engine dash light in the NCT manual, hence my query. However there is mention made to failing for brake warning lights etc.

I read the Diesel section, appears to only apply to those registered before 1980 as its a visual test.

It's not necessarily a fail, if the light relates to a fault which would bring about a fail then... errr... it's a fail, but the tester doesn't glean that from the light.

My car passed the NCT with the engine light on, the fault was a heater circuit in the O2 sensor.

    Edit: it's a petrol

It won't fail just because the light is showing. Mine has that light on all the time and she flew through the test a few weeks ago.

    Diesel or petrol?

The engine management light in itself is not a fail for the NCT, whether diesel or petrol. However the cause of the light may very well cause a fail. I'm sure someone will be along to state that according to the NCT manual it's a fail on a diesel, but it's not an automatic fail. I know of a diesel car which recently passed with the light illuminated.

There was only a thread on this recently where the OP in that thread passed NCT with engine management light on.

For the record, an Amber Engine light alone, as above, is NOT an NCT fail as proven yesterday by said car.

Yeah I said before it's not a fail for a petrol car since it's not mentioned in the manual as a tested item for petrol cars.

I'd be interested to hear from people that have passed nct with an engine light on in a diesel, since the manual states that a diesel cannot be smoke tested with a engine warning light on.

car will always be tested as long as it has enough oil and is running right, petrol or diesel

So the manual isn't correct, a smoke test will still be done?
Or will all other tests be done and the diesel failed on the smoke test alone?

smoke test will still be done if engine management light is on , oil level correct and engine deemed to be running fine.

NCT now refusing to test Diesel cars, where engine light in on? Anybody had that experience?

My car runs perfectly for past three years. Garage was unable find the fault. They tried several times. Any suggestions?

It's in the NCT manual for a couple of years now that if it's on with a diesel to not test the car. When the garage read the fault what was the error it showed?
