I have a friend from Syria who wants to come to this country.
He does not have a visa at the moment.
Does anyone know can he apply for refugee status here because of war?

Probably. I'd say ask a solicitor before booking his flights though.

That is the best answer you'll get in After Hours at this time of night.

If he comes to Ireland he can, AFAIK, apply for refugee status. However he'll be put into direct provision housing which isn't pleasant, and he could be there for years until his application is reviewed to see if they think he meets the criteria.

Thank you for your reply, and I understand about AH but he I have been on phone to him for past 2 hours and his spirit is quite low. Thought I would throw it out there

His brother was married to my cousin but they both died in a car crash.

Not taking the whole of Syria in, just one person and only asking the possibilities

Are you genuinely in love with each other?

Does he/ she genuinely have a misty eyed interest in this country for cultural reasons rather than financial or political refuge

    Then only, under these circumstances.

I would say get in touch with your local TD for advice.

    Political refugee?

my Iranian uncle who an aunt married here went back home because he felt a little constrained, tbh. She is a hard woman to be round but he missed a few things he could do there too

If I was him I would go to Germany,Norway or Sweden were refugees are treated with decency. Here you are thrown into a damp room with €20 a week and nothing to do for years

    Political refugee?

I'm not entirely sure of his exact status but from my understanding of it its political.

Highest number of refugees granted full asylum here are Syrians compared to the usual countries

Probably, and I'm purposely not getting into too much detail here.

I'd hazard a guess that almost 99% of the forum don't personally know an asylum seeker and their plight both at home/travels and through out asylum system but it won't stop them taking a guess at what they think is/should be the right thing to do.

Well when it's those people's tax money that's paying for these people's refuge so I think they have the right to have an opinion on the matter.

Would he not have to claim asylum in the first country he enters after leaving Syria?

Only asking as I doubt Ryanair do direct flights and I have heard this before about claiming asylum.

Considering our tax money is now being used to finance and arm sectarian death squads in Syria,(E.U funding...not in my name) we should take a little responsibility for the clusterf#ck that follows.
