VW engines c.2000

    Hi all,

I'm in the market for a second hand car around the year 2000. I've been looking at all makes and models but from talking to a mechanic and seeing it for myself in the ad descriptions, how come a lot of the VW engines in the Golf, Bora, Fabia, Ibiza, etc., have engine trouble at that age?

It seems a lot fail their NCT on emissions. Is it a sign of hard driving by previous owners or are VW just happy to let them wear out like that over time?

I don't want to buy something like a '00 Bora or Cordoba for €800 and then spend €2000 on an engine replacement.

    Thanks for your insights.....

The 1.4 litre 16v of that vintage was a very poor engine, they burned alot of oil and best avoided imo. Better off going for the 1.6 litre 8v, it's an older engine but alot more reliable.

Regarding emissions, these engines use a good few oxygen sensors which are prone to getting dirty or failing which can result in high emissions. EGR valves, MAF or throttle body sensors being the main ones that need either a good cleaning or replacing.

The 1.6 8v is just as bad as the 1.4 16v for burning oil and failing emissions IMO.

    Cheers guys.

So is it a case of just avoiding those cars I mentioned and going for something else?

Almera, Lancer? I'll only be doing 3-4000 miles per year. But I'd prefer it to be as hassle free as possible. Looks/badge don't matter.

You can't buy a 13 year old car on reputation. You need to judge each individual car on its merits. Buy a car in the best condition with the most comprehensive service history you can find and you should be grand.
