I have faulty vw passat 1.8 t petrol, with typical turbo failure, loads of smoke and sluggish , with tired constant wrrrrrrrrr from turbocharger side while driving, compression in all cylinders 11 bars, so assume turbo gone.

maybe somebody would suggest company which do turbocharger reconditioning, or sell for reasonable money used GOOD ones ? would willing go to NI if there is significant savings.

K03 turbo, i think k04 also would fit.

    Thanks.

There are a lot of cheap Chinese K03 turbos around which are complete crap so be careful if you are buying one and make sure it is a genuine KKK unit.

Reconditioned can be a bit iffy - anything from repainted upwards

that link shows in paunds, and with VAT it is near 440 GBP , which is over 500 € quid, but i believe thats for a brand new and original one, get 150 GBP back, if send an old unit back.

i think to go for used one, but any idea how much would cost reconditioned one ? or if i give old unit back for reconditioning. if there is little difference, maybe go for reconditioning option. i have no rush here, can wait.

I know of 2 places that might have turbos for that car, both in the north.... Audi A4 have the same engine and turbo? One of he places has one, avant 1.8. Looking about £100 - £150 ;)

Ring around a few salvage yards and pick up a second hand one... If you can fit it yourself, this will probably be cheapest option

dont really understand your point there, what part of a turbo would you expect to be "painted",if a turbo is properly reconditioned it should in no way be "iffy",it should run for many years provided its looked after with oil changes

By "painted" i meant just cleaned up instead of checked over and the needed repairs done

My nephew sells re manufactured turbos, years gaurantee(subject to your mechanic following all the cleaning instruction)

he says ,as has been said above ,beware of cheap re conditioned ones.

So some update on this, if interested.

took used turbo charger off friend of friends hands, who works with cars, paid 150 euro.

    changed oil and filters, coolant.
    fitted " new" turbo.

    actually easy enough.

at the beginning exhaust poured scary smokes , that had to switch off car... thought "new" turbo also broken, but after few heat ups, smokes reduced significantly, then we went to motorway, for 70 miles round trip, but after first 30 miles, smoke gone completely.
Great thing that car, was first time ever i drove vw passat 1.8T engine(150 hp), and really love it.

    EDIT:

Any idea what to do with old turbo ? any company buy them ? or just through in bin ?
