    Hi Guys

I was using the zoom ring on my 17-35L f/2.8 ,zooming in and out and Suddenly the zoom ring will not zoom the lens in/out

The lens' glass usually moves a few mil out to zoom to 35mm .

Since the zoom ring is broken , if i point the lens towards the ground the glass moves to the 35mm end .

If I point it upwards it moves back to the 17mm end

Keep in mind that I am not touching the zoom ring

I cannot autofocus when the glass is at the 35mm end but I can autofocus at 17mm .

Is this able to be fixed ??

If I shake the lens slightly I can distinctively hear the sound of a screw .

Could a screw just have come loose and allowed the glass to move freely ?

    Thanks

STOP tilting it up and down. You could damage/scratch elements. Contact Canon and get it repaired before you do more damage to it.

Not cheap. Depends where you bought it (europe or the US/Asia if its in warranty). Being a pro lens....not cheap. Canon is at ISS (or is IIS?) off Wexford Street in Dublin. They'll probably send it to the UK. so try Canon UK first and take a middle man out of the process. There is probably a minimum fee (E30?) for a quote at least.

I had a bad Nikon 24-70 2.8 a few years ago (damaged in transit) that I bought in NYC. Sent it to Nikon Ireland...who sent it to Nikon UK....who sent it back to Nikon Ireland after I decided I didn't want to pay nearly €700 to get it fixed who then sent it back to me.
I then sent it to the shop I bought it from (luckily the lens hood was damaged when I bought it and got a discount so it was proof there was damage to the lens...literally last copy available on a holiday weekend in NY when I was there so I had to buy it). They then sent it to Nikon US who repaired it for free, sent it back to the shop who sent it to me...7 months later and about €150 in shipping I had a MINT 24-70 lens.

Mine is a long story. Hopefully your's wont be as expensive. Hopefully they look after you well and get it sorted reasonably cheap.

The 17-35 is such a good lens and so expensive its worth getting it fixed. Badger Canon saying its manufacturing issues that caused the fault. Once it hasn't been abused/dropped or damaged then it can't have been you. Just do't relent at all. You might get it fixed for little to nothing hopefully.

    Hi Pete.

I went on the canon.ie website. And went to the repair section and there. Is a
Shop in the UK that specializes in lense fixing so I sent them a request

The lense is. From 1999 (from what I can tell from the date code..it is badly faded)

The lens is my dads. and he said. This has happened before and he had it fixed in Newmans camera shop in limerick.

I'll just have to wait until tomorrow to get a reply

    Thanks
