This may strike you as a stupid question but, in all honesty, do girls actually do Engineering, Theoretical Physics or any of those heavily maths-based courses?

And if so, how many are in the classes?

    Cheers,
    plmko :D

I'm not in Engineering and know a load of female Engineers. I my year there's about 6 or 7 girls in Theoretical Physics, about 10 in maths including TSM.

    Yes girls do those courses.

In my year it was about 30% women of about 100

    Lucky.

Not one girl in my course. It sucked.

The soon to be 3rd year TP class was 2 girls out of 40 or so.

Both courses were around 20% when I was in them. Trinity being on average 60% female helped though!

When I was in 1st year (2009) it was around 30-40%...won't speculate on what it is now...

Of the class going into 4th year TP, I'd estimate between a fifth and a quarter are girls.

When they were in JF, there was only one girl.

The ladies certainly rise to the top. I've a friend running a biomedical SME startup. He employs around 15 engineering and biomed Phd's. All female bar one.

Its actually 75%, taking into account a standard error of 5%.

Cheers mate! I'd love to do any of these courses, I'm just afraid I'd have no other girls on the course with me! :p

I had the same worries going in, I have just finished Mathematics and there was 5 girls in a class of 19 finishing in fourth year... we started with more but the classes tend to change over the years as people repeat and drop out.

There are also incentives in Engineering for girls, like in first year there is a prize for the best girl in engineering! I wouldn't worry :D

Ooh wow I love a competition! Thanks for the reassurance

Yeah but Engineering is so big, like 150+, so that makes it 15-20 girls at least

Yeah that sounds about right. About 20.

I'm going into second year engineering and 30 out of 200 are female.
To be honest, I don't even notice the disparity anymore. All my friends are girls and I have enough of them, so it's a non-issue.
From what I've heard, the boys have more of an issue with it than the girls.

The males can be a little... uncouth at times though.
