The Irish Mob

The first culture to introduce a proper run system of organised crime to the USA according to TJ English the true crime writer were the Irish in the late 1800s. Owney Madden was the first boss to set up camp on the West side of Manhattan, an area which would later become known as Hell's Kitchen. Later boss's were the likes of Mickey Spillane and James Coonan of the infamous Westies who took over Hell's Kitchen after killing Spillane in 1977.

In other cities like Chicago you had guys like Dion O'Banion and the North side gang facing off against the Gennas and Capones. Boston became the focus during prohibition when the Italians squeezed NY. Joe Kennedy and co took notice.

In this country little is ever spoken of the Irish Mob. Apart from TG4 running the odd programme. I find the subject interesting, especially since the Whitey Bulger Trial started.

I prefer the modern terms such as Scumbags and Knackers, so there was a Knacker problem back them to hey, who would have thunk it.

I know, I'm surprised this wasn't used as part of the promotional material for "The Gathering".

An interesting Irish mob story is that of Vincent 'Mad Dog' Coll born in Gweedore Donegal of all places. He got his nickname after he inadvertently killed a five year old child in an attempted mob hit. His wife stated that he never slept sound again after it, he'd scream and weep in his sleep.

In 1932 Coll got himself on the wrong side of a Mafia argument. He was sent to kill Salvatore 'Lucky' Luciano. Lucky was wise to the hit and wiped out his opponent beforehand. Coll now was a gonner, both the Irish Mob and Mafia wanted him dead.

On February 1st Owney Madden lured Coll to a phone box on the pretense of setting up more work. As they talked two Luciano mob members pulled up with Tommy Guns and riddled the phone booth. That was the end of the Mad Dog.

This is fantastic, I am actually just about half way through TJ English's book The Westies, its gruesome but fascinating. A lot of bits seem to be added in for effect, but it's an unbelievable tale.

Kill the Irishman was a decent film

Denny Greene was a good solider in WWII and then worked on the Cleveland docks. Seemed a decent lad but that didn't last

Somehow managed to take over the union and get into all the rackets.
He disliked Italians but would work with them to make money.

Survived multiple assassination attempts and by the end probably thought he was invincible.
A large tricolour hanging outside his house as he would never go into hiding.

Well I won't say what happened in the end.

Not a fantastic film and story but worth a watch for sure

Danny Greene was an interesting chap indeed a one man stand nearly, The Italians couldn't get rid of him, this of course got back to the Commission in NYC and they offered help which the Cleveland mob were too proud to accept.

He ran rings around the greasers for years and made a lot of money before they finally got him in a car bomb. If I remember correctly the investigation into his death brought down many high ranking mob guys in Cleveland at the time.

I loved that film! Bit cliched but still good! That and Boardwalk Empire got me interested in Irish gangs over in America. There are good documentaries on YouTube about them, about when the started getting prominent up to Whitey Bulger and his mob.

There was/is, yes. There's the funny myth that everybody who left here was a saint, or stayed honest despite where they ended up.
