Hi, I have recently taken up golf and I am really enjoying it. I would like to get a official handicap though. I have played I'm stepaside public course and elm green but would preferably like a club in south dublin. I am a student but I also work mon~fri so I would need to be able to play at weekends.

Would anyone have any suggestions as to clubs which wouldn't break the bank and would welcome a total beginner lady member?

To make it more difficult I am moving to the uk in January so would want to only join a club for 6 months.

Grange Castle pay and play option is €210 from now until March. You'll get your GUI from that and pay reduced green fees for any rounds you play.
You'll be able to play in the lady's comps at the weekends. There are generally 30 or so out on a Sat.

Seem a friendly bunch, not that I've ever talk to a female golfer though ;):)

The fact that you are a student should allow you 'student membership' I would have thought. Not familiar with clubs around Dublin but as an example Mitchelstown G.C membership is normally €680 but only €125 per year to students. I know most other clubs around this area operate similarly. Would probably be worth asking the question at your local courses.

At present there is full, ordinary, family, junior, student, distance, overseas, country, 5 day and also honorary memberships available in most if not all golf clubs on this island. Only yesterday I saw on the back of my Dunnes Stores receipt a certain golf club in Tipp. offering membership for €150.

Personally, I would be against 6 month membership category's although I know there are many people that only play during the summer, however, golf courses need to be looked after for 12 months of the year. Ask most membership secretaries and I would suggest that for a large %, actual membership is in decline, despite large numbers of courses actually freezing or reducing membership fees in face of competition.

I understand the predicament the op is in and I certainly wouldn't expect her to pay full subs if she is in fact emigrating, however, I do believe it could be a slippery slope if golf clubs actually start promoting this sort of category. Imagine your own course if you could just play from April until September for half the price.

There's plenty of places offering short term memberships at the moment. Just try ringing and asking. Ballinascorney is a friendly 9 hole club near Marley Park for a start. Kilcoole are also looking. Most places want new members particularly young guys who might be with them for years. Dunlaoghaire did have offers but that might be closed. Try anyway, you've nothing to lose.

i am after looking up both Ballinascorney and Grange Castle, Ballinascorneys website is very unclear as to prices so i may give them a call tomorrow.

    Grange castle seem good,

    Student Lady Membership € 265.00
Student Pay & Play Lady Membership 135 euro

this is for a year so wondering would there be any leeway on this?
my friend would be joining with me, in the exact same position beginner no handycab and a student. I wonder could i be really cheeky and ask for us both for 265 for 6 months!!
