Please feel free to move if in wrong forum as I'm not sure!
Anyway, basically I am trying to set up a social networking site for Mums to meet each other in Ireland. I'm relatively a junior in web design and because I've experience with Joomla, I want to use that. Is there some kind of component, plugin etc I can install on a joomla site? Something that allows user registration, profile pages, messaging etc.? Any help greatly appreciated.

Jomsocial and community builder are the ones that spring to mind. I've experience with Jomsocial and found it covered most bases you need in a social network type plugin.

If you didn't want to go down the joomla route there are out of the box solutions: http://www.socialengine.com/ but cost might be a bit high.

Yeah I also thought about not using Joomla but social engine is out of my price range unfortunately.

    BuddyPress would be worth considering.

It's completely free and does a lot. Briefly, it's WordPress with a load of community stuff added. Very easily done.

Might got shot for this but how about vbulletin? It's what boards.ie is built on

Hi everyone, thanks for all the help. In the end I went with PHP Fox.

Social Engine is total junkware anyway. Really slow and buggy.

I know it's too late, but I'd have suggested Buddypress too.
