    Hi,

Hope someone can help me here.

    I've a 2006 Focus with 110bhp tdci engine

theres a ticking noise coming from the top half of engine.

I'm guessing its something in the head.

Any ideas of what it could be?

    Luke

Seems a similar noise the op had here..:)

Again i'd suspect leaking injector seals so check for a black carbon substance around the injectors and fumes in the engine bay.
If all is o.k then get a mechanic to check it out as it could be the cam chain.

I'm pretty sure its not an injector seal.

No smell or fumes under the bonnet at all.

The car has a timing belt.

I'd imagine its something like a tappet???

The dv6 engine is a 16 valve unit so it has a timing belt and a cam chain which joins the two camshafts.
These chains can stretch and cause a ticking a noise so its best get it checked out..;)

I had the same ticking noise with the same make and model. T'was the fan belt. One of the teeth on the inside of the belt was missing. Drove me nuts till it was sorted. Started after a new timing belt was fitted, so that's where I spent a lot of time looking.

Ill run it without that belt but Im fairly confident the noise is coming from the head.

    Thank you

Timing chain removed for engine this evening.

Wonder what sort of play is in a new one?

Seems to be a little more play in it than I think there should be.

Anyone have any experience with one of these?

Note: the tensioner seems fine and there's no marks in the cam cover.

I have found in the past that one or two links can have excess play but generally the whole chain can stretch.
Even with one link with excess play the chain tends to rattle.

Its always best replace the tensioner as well as the chain while you have it out as the new tensioners have been modified.
The chain and the tensioner come as a kit..:)

How did you get on with the cam chain/tensioner....?

New chain and tensioner done the business.

Fair play to ya for putting me on the right road.

    Thanks again.

Just for other people out there,

the timing chain was only stretched be approx. 3mm.

and this seemed to be over three or four links.

The rest of the chain matched up perfectly with the new one.

    Thanks for the update luke...;)
Its amazing how a few mm makes such a difference.
The last one I replaced had only one weak link with around 2mm of play, needless to say if this link had snapped totally the engine would be a near right off..
Like the old saying "A stitch in time saves 9"..:)
