Hi i got a new alternator belt fitted by my local garage 3 weeks ago , Last weekend the belt started screeching pretty bad so i tightened up the belt myself and all was good until today , i was just on my way home from town when it started screeching again and it just snapped after about 30secs , So i just about about made it home and checked all the pulley's and the all are moving freely .

Anyone got any ideas why it only lasted 3 weeks .
    The car is a 1998 Mazda 323 1.3 salloon .

What condition are the teeth on the pulley in? Perhaps they are worn and causing it to slip and friction causing it to wear down?

Thanks for the reply Hal1 , The teeth seem to be fine on all the pulley's .

You pretty much shot down any chance of claim by doing it yourself. If you don't trust them go somewhere else.

    Because you tightened it yourself.

It may be possible that the original cause of failure wasn't rectified, possibly a pulley with worn or seizing bearings.

However, belts with manual tensioners normally need to be adjusted after a few miles so the fact that it needed tightening after a couple of weeks can be normal, unfortunately, you may then have overtightened it causing the failure. If all pulleys are ok then this is the likely cause IMO.
