Hi, I'd like some advice on what type of road bike to get for a beginner. I want to make a move from running to cycling and I really don't have a clue about what I should be looking for.

I intend to do a few short cycles mid week and a long one at the weekend.

My budget is around the 700 mark but would be flexible because I'll be using the bike to work scheme.

    Any help would be appreciated.

What made you decide to go for a road bike? why not consider cross country cycling!

I never actually considered it, it just seemed easier to get out cycling on the road that's where I used to do most of my running too.

Where are you situated? Are there mountain/hillside areas near you? It might be worth investigating to see where your nearest trials are. Cross country cycling is a great rush! And a fantastic workout..

My nearest purpose built mountain bike tracks are located in the Ballyhoura range in Limerick. http://visitballyhoura.com/index.php/mountain-biking/

Maybe there is something like this near you.. get off the road and see the beauty of the country i say!

Thanks, but I think I'd like to stick with the road bike for the time being.

I prefer the idea of it to tell you the truth.
It seems like the perfect replacement for running at the minute, because I can get home from work and just jump on the bike.
The travelling to a trail doesn't really appeal to me at the minute.
