    Hope this makes sense....

As I let the bike freewheel - as soon as I engage the pedals again the 1st push seems to 'drop' quick fast. Have stopped standing on the pedals at the end of a freewheel as the drop can be a bit of a shock as it happens.

Any ideas on what would be causing this pedal drop??

It's likely that your freewheel is knackered. It should engage immediately when you turn the pedals.

Could be the pawl spring has gone too, happened me last yr got a free pawl spring off my nice LBS and it has run like a dream ever since.

My Mavics do this sometimes. Bush drags when freewheeling, chain goes slack and no uptake on resuming pedalling. Stripped, cleaned and lubed the freehub to sort it out.

Your pawls are not re-engaging like they should. This can be due to being worn out, fecked springs, or crud impeding their operation.

A new freehub will sort you out. You can also get the freehub serviced, which MIGHT fix the problem. Here's a how-to:

Try working some light oil into it first before spending any money.

Thanks all.... that link is quite comprehensive. Probably too much for me - so down to LBS for this job.

Actually - gave the cassette, chain etc a good clean this weekend. Hope this might help it. Cassette seems in good nick - teeth all look good.

Quick question - cleaning the rear derailleur I noticed a spring that was fility.. but found it hard to clean even with a toothbrush. any idea of how to get the gunk of that spring???
