Anybody seen this show which has been airing at 7 pm on Thursdays?I saw one episode and thought it did give a good insight into just how difficult vet school is though I would rather have seen more hands on experience with cattle as this is my area of preference.
    Thoughts on the series?

More cattle, are you serious, it's been mostly cattle so far! :pac:
The bit from Troytown was brilliant, I'd love to see more equines :) Also Foto Island looked great, it'd be class to work there
But yeah, the programme really shows how difficult veterinary is, it has to be a vocation! I'd love to do it, really hope I'd be able to cope with all that stress! Are you going for it yourself?? :P

My partner is in final year this year. The people on the show are last years final years. It is not easy. They expect you to not work as all holidays (xmas, midterms and summers) from 1st year to final year you have to do work experience called EMS, the presume you have a car and pay out a fortune for everything, scrubs, books, etc. You have no summer in final year, you finish your exams for 4th year and straight after you get your results (2 weeks later) you are into 5th year. You are expected to be in at latest 7:30AM for rotations and they go anything from 7-10pm at night and you are even expected to be there at nights and weekends too. You do those hours, go home and have to study what you did that day and prepare for the next day by studying even more. It is soul destroying, you have to love it.

We are due a second baby this summer, he will not get to see our kids this year sometimes for a fortnight at a time as you have to go to different places for placement and EMS. It is intense, many people go into Veterinary for the wrong reasons and they regret it no end, many only went in because they missed medicine, they don't tend to get through without repeats, and book smarts alone mean nothing to a half a ton terrified animal!

Ya,Iv just passed 1st year which I have been told is the easiest year:eek:
I studied harder in 1st Vet than for my leaving cert and yet my grades were not very good but as long as I pass im happy. Most people are extremely driven and some(maybe 5-10%) are frighteningly intelligent..I can think of about 4 people out of maybe 75-80 who didnt get medicine. Im not sure which course is harder but I cant imagine there is much between them. I actually know the Vet who is the orthopaedic specialist in the last episode and he does have a very nice lifestyle these days so hopefully it will be worth it in the end.

My partner started Medicine but went into Veterinary, they are nearly identical. Medicine you go into more detail, veterinary you are dealing with more animals, different anatomies, etc, you know yourself. First year and second year are easier than the rest, get as much EMS done as you can now. Best advice I can give you from himself.
