Looking at old house - planning issues

Im looking at buying a 1950s house. Its all good apart from the lack of any planning permission. Im aware that 1950s is before planning came in but this house has been majorly been rebuilt with block walls around 1980 from memory. The front elevation was completely rebuilt. It has also had a 2 storey extension to the rear.
Now I know if this were to be carried out today, it would not be exempt but is it possible that these works were exempt back in 1980?
My basic question is - were the planning laws back in 1980 much more lax with regard to what could be carried out without permission.

Not really...there would have been less exemptions than there are today.
