7 year old underbite and orthodontics

Hi does anyone have any experience of underbite in a child.

DD1 who's seven was seen in the HSE dental clinic and told she had greater than 3mm underbite. The senior dentist felt she needed orthodontics and referred her to the HSE service who refused to see her as she's under 12.

He was very insistent that she needs to be started on treatment under age 8 as it' s much more difficult to treat after this. He wrote a letter of appeal and we were refused again so will have to have private treatment.

Has anyone had any experience of what this will involve and the potential costs?? A google search talks about splints and head braces  but isn't very clear and all seems to be American sites.

We've made an appointment to see someone to see an orthodontist that was recommended to us but the more info I have before hand the better. Are some orthodontists specially trained in younger children or are they all the same? What should I ask about.

I didn't expect to be forking out for braces this early. sigh..

looking up info on the net is the same as finding a piece of paper on the ground that could've been covered in vomit from an old dog. better wait until you see the orthodontist, you'll be in good hands then.

The HSE orthodontic service is very heavily overscribed. Private braces wont cost that much over the time frame involved. As kid myself I have removable braces at the start to help control the growth of the jaw and them conventional braces. Your looking around 60-80 euro a month over 5-6 years. At the moment in this country orthodontic treatment is IMHO a very reasonable price.
