Hi, is there anybody that would be able to answer the following..... if somebody is in receipt of the BTEA and then their partner becomes a dependant, can they then request an increase of the BTEA to allow for the adult dependant? Thanks

You can have your partner added to your claim as an adult dependant. If they have recently become unemployed a p45 may be requested.

thanks eastbono, what if the partner had been in receipt of JSA but then returned to college? they are not entitled to btea in their own right as would be doing a masters.

You can add them to your claim as an ada...an ada doesnt have to be looking for or available for work. They can attend college if they want to.

    Hi,
Just to clarify you can claim for an adult dependent even if your partner is working see below

    Income limits
    For most social welfare payments
your adult dependant cannot have gross weekly earnings or income (before tax and PRSI deductions) of more than €310. If your adult dependant earns less than €100 you will get a full Increase for a Qualified Adult (IQA). If your adult dependant earns between €100 and €310 you will get a reduced rate of IQA (sometimes called a tapered rate of IQA). If your adult dependant is earning more than €310 you will not get an IQA

cheers ifeelill, it's a minefield! I'm on jsb and will be doing masters in sept, oh has been a dependant on my claim since dec 2012 so think he is able to apply for the btea as he starting vollege for the first time, no idea how we will survive if he doesn't get the btea but having been made redundant 3 times in 3 years we have to try something!

He can do whats known as a spousal swap for btea and you go on his claim as an ada.

You wont qualify for btea as you hold a post grad qualification.

If he holds a qualification at a higher level than what he hopes to pursue then he wont qualify but if his highest academic qualification is lower then yes he will unless he is going studying for a masters which isnt covered.

Hi LJ82 I had a further and more indepth look at the criteria for btea allowance. The spousal swap is dependant on you being eligible for btea, currently you would be eligible if you were to do a hdip in education. I think you best get confirmation from your local office that your OH could do a spousal swap and be eligible.

cheers, i'll pop in tomorrow and see what they say, might give the btea people a buzz too

so I was in social welfare today and they said that my oh would be entitled to the btea but not until aug 27th when we will have 234 days of unemployment, the tricky part now is...aug 27th is also the day that my jsb expires....we have to establish an entitlement to jsa and apply for the btea before my oh registers for college on sept 11th....not sure how I will be switched/means tested from the jsb to the jsa or even if it will be done in the timeframe

Hello, Just a quick one im very confused.. I have been accepted on a part time course ( 1 full day per week) it has a Fetac Level 5 Award. I am a Dependent Adult on my husband claim ( I claim for credits) and we also have a child on our claim. Can I do a spousal swap on our claim so I will be the main applicant?
