A Brave New World Big Brother

I'd say it's only a matter of time before this is the norm around the world, and what a great way to really monitor people don't you think ?.

What do you think of this crazy stuff ?.

    The Washington Times.

It hardly gets more Orwellian than this. New technology would allow cable companies to peer directly into television watchers’ homes and monitor viewing habits and reactions to product advertisements

You have been evicted, please leave the television in my house. You have been evicted, please leave the television in my house. You have been evicted, please leave the television in my house.

Damm boy, I told you. I gave you fair warning.

My granny used to put on her Sunday coat to watch the six o clock news. Maybe she wasn't so slow after all.

    Jesus ever-loving Christ!

They put a camera in every livingroom and it's 'market reasearch', but I put one camera in the ladies toilets I'm a pervert!

This is twisted stuff, what kind of sociopathic mind comes up with this? More to the point, who would accept it?

The thing about all these big brother things is that the general public is adding a sinister element to the equation that just isn't there in real life.

It's computers doing the monitoring not people. People can't monitor thousands or millions of people for every reaction. It's going to be a mindless machine looking for triggers and reacting with set procedures. The computer doesn't give a damn who you are or what you watch and the media companies can hardly use what you watch against you seeing as they're the people providing you with the content.

Regardless of what the machine finds the media companies are going to want to force their commercialistic propaganda programing at you so that you follow the right trends and buy the right products. Any observing is to fine tune that system not get to know you better.

The technology includes cameras and microphones that are installed on DVRs or
cable boxes and analyzes viewers’ responses, behaviors and statements to
various ads — and then provides advertisements that are targeted to the
    particular household.

Specifically, the technology can monitor sleeping, eating, exercising,
    reading and more, AdWeek reported

    You cant be defending this?
It is certain to be abused, all your personal home moments caught on video with audio aswell
    Its beyond mental.

Until PRISM get their hands on it, the blithe assumption that such 'market research is 'benign' has been pretty comprehensively blown out of the water lately. As for a bit of 'observing to fine tune the system', people are people, they can and will inevitabily abuse such a system.
How about, no company has the right to measure the number of times I scratch my balls while slumped on the couch watching the footie?
I'll never understand how people passively accept the level of intrusive and constant encroachment into every aspect of their lives that corporations are conducting.

Put a piece of masking tape over the camera.

That's good but unless you are good at electronics and know how to take the cable-box apart to disconnect the microphone then they can still hear you fapping off to the porn channel or whatever else people are doing and groaning at.

Or if you found a microphone and camera in your cable box, rip out the box and fu*k it through the cable companies window ;)

That would be their service, if you don't like it use a different service. I got rid of my TV so this isn't an issue for me. I drew the line a long time ago, I already think people are being taken advantage of with the likes of Sky so it wouldn't surprise me if people accept this intrusion so they can continue to pay a premium to watch twice as many ads.

Why do you think anyone would want to know that? Maybe if they can suggest some topical cream it would be of benefit to you.

Garunteed there will be a 'we are watching you through your tv - licence fee' to go with it too

I'd say if they done this to cable-boxes, the camera and microphone would be embedded deep under the mobo and made difficult to get to using odd-ball screws that no-one has the special screw-driver to be able to remove them without damaging the system.

Just point the camera at itself.
This will cause the monitoring system to go into an irreversible loop, causing it to implode.

I can see a time when these kinds of cameras are inserted into a pixel space on all tv's and computer monitors of which cannot be removed without damaging the monitor. But there will always be a hack to stop or block it i'm sure.

    Ya, a bit of sellotape.

That would mess up the shows you would be watching, having to look at a movie or a tv show with a lump of sellotape on the monitor. also how would you know which front side of the tv or monitor the camera was if it was the size of a pixel ? embedded as a pixel.

If you have a land line telephone then it's possible that they've been listening in to you all the time.

Silent answer on mobile phone also makes a good listening device.

There have been several vulnerabilities in Flash alone that allow them to use your computers mic and webcam.

Perhaps opaque tape would work better ?

Seriously some black tapes are transparent to infra-red

Sellotape a small headphone earpiece to the mic and plug it into a cheap portable radio tuned to a radio station with loads of ads. Or better still, loop the tv sound back into itself through the earpiece. And tape over the camera. Job done.
I dont care if people think im being too paranoid. They can go and..... with their snooping, machine or not.

Yes, but still, how would you know the location of the camera (the size of a pixel) to put the sellotape over ?. Of all the millions of pixels on the monitor, how would a person find the right pixel that is the camera ?. Especially on a 40/50 inch tv or pc monitor.

Can you not just put the box in a cabinet or get one of those telly stands with a press underneath to house the telly box?
