Have been using Runkeeper for the last few months and overall i find it quite good. Sometimes though it does have the odd malfunction in that it gets a km measurement grossly incorrect.

I was just wondering what is the best app out there for tracking your runs?

None of them will ever be fully accurate and a watch is generally more accurate. I found mapmyrun, runkeeper and endomondo to be roughly similar in terms of accuracy

Pretty much depends on the GPS unit in your phone which can be hit and miss.

I use Cardiotrainer which is actually very close to my Garmin generally, but i think the GPS on my Galaxy S2 is randomly very accurate.

Do any of them calculate ascent? Know mapmyrun shows a profile, but would like something where I can just see the overall metres ascended.

I used Endomondo for a good few months before I got a watch, and the altitude was always waaaaaay off, although I'd imagine it's the phone's fault rather than app itself.

Nike+ Running. I find it great, accurate on iphone 4 but not on Galaxy s+. Has the best user interface and it's a free full version. You can also sync it to endomondo but not the other way around.

Garmin connect app integrates very well and if your planning on getting a garmin watch it'll mean all your stuff is stored on the garmin connect website :)

Strava is your only man it is bang on even checking it versus a watch

Have used Runkeeper, Endomondo and MapmyRun in the past and found Runkeeper to be the most reliable phone app with clean website.

I would still recommend a gps watch with Garmin Connect though if you want accuracy and reliability.

I was using Endomondo until I saw the permissions. It accesses your contacts & reads your call logs. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.endomondo.android&hl=en Once I read that I decided it wasn't for me, & right now I'm looking for a replacement that's not spyware. Strava's permissions (for example) are much more benign https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.strava.run&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5zdHJhdmEucnVuIl0.
