Effect pedals you think are essential for a bassist!

    Hey,
I'v recently gotten a voucher for Xmusic to the value of €100 and i'm thinking of getting a pedal to add to my rig. I usually just plug my bass straight into the DI or amp but seeing as it's basically €100 off a pedal I may aswell get one.
Seeing as this is my first pedal I'm not sure what to get. I'v had a few people tell me that I can't go wrong with a good equalizer or compression pedal!

I'l add money to the pedal if I feel it's worth getting :)
I try play as many styles as possible so I'd really be looking to a pedal that can be flexible!

    Thanks guys :)

Heh, EQ and compressors are pretty much the only two pedal types I don't have.

I run through a tuner, synth, fuzz, wah, chorus and delay. The one I would use most would be the fuzz (EHX big muff) due to the style I play.

To suit all styles, you can't go wrong with a tuner :) But assuming your bass is of a decent standard, simply tuning at the start of the set is probably enough.

If you don't have a tuner get one.

If you do get a compressor or a nice graphic EQ

it's a tough one to call without knowing what type of amp you have, what style you play etc.. some amps have very useable compression, decent eq sections.. if yours falls into this category you cold try a fuzz/overdrive pedal or an octave pedal.
beware though......once you get one, you'll catch the bug and end up with a massive pedalboard

I'm using an Ashdown Five Fifteen at the moment so my EQing and compression abilities are pretty much none existing at the moment although I do plan on moving to a head and cab pretty soon so I'm not sure if a compression or EQ pedal would be the best option!
I literally play as many styles as I can whether it be rock, funk, jazz or blues so i'd like to get an effect that could be handy in the majority of these styles.

I'v heard after you buy your first pedal you crave more and more :pac:

Well I would think more processing than effects then.

    Boss Compressor/Limiter
    Boss EQ
    Tuner
    Decent DI

After that maybe a chorus pedal.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with a fuzz pedal. An EHX Big Muff or Big Muff Deluxe would be my pedal of choice!

depends on your style of music of course, but I have never used anything other than a clean signal.

Tuner. That's the only essential one, everything else is fun. Some really nasty dirt or fuzz pedal is always a laugh.

There is only one pedal you need, a RAT. The original one.

get a volume pedal and secretly place it in the lead guitarists line so you can control the fupper!
    Best pedal you ever bought!

If only i had such a thing to work on the damn drummer :P

TC polytune, bought a chorus but dont use it.

You beat me to it but I was gonna say throw it in the bassists line! Its not always the guitarist lads :p

True actually, went to a gig a while ago, decent enough band but gig ruined by the plonker of a bassist who had a stack in a room of 50 people at most and drowned out everyone

thought he was special, he was special alright........

Speaking of pedals though has anyone gone down the route of a pedal preamp?

Yes, there is always the odd exception to the otherwise definite rule. :p

Just got myself a Palmer Pocket Amp for rehearsals (coz Im a lazy bastard and its smaller than my Cube) but we did a support slot for a friends band last weekend and I used it. Sounded great honestly. Im thinking this is the way of the, or at least my, future.

Its certainly better than hauling a 4x12 around like I used to.
