    Hi All

I've pretty much settled on an S40 for my next car. I'm going for an 09 or 10 reg but undecided on the engine.

I've driven the 2.0 diesel and really liked it. There are a lot of 1.6 engines out there though... Is it something to look at? I'd be concerned it being underpowered.

Anything else to look out for on either engine?

    Cheers!

You might find it harder to find the 2.0 diesel i think it was badged a D3 at this stage
the 1.6 (D2)is adequate i would take one out for a spin and see what you think

I'd not bother with one to be honest, in any flavour.

Ah thanks for the clarification. I was wondering where all the 2.0l were when I was searching.

    Cheers

I'd be more concerned about buying a 1.6D thats a few years old than it being underpowered.

    I'd go 2.0D tbh.

Very few post 2008 S40 2.0d for sale here, majority of them are 1.6d. 2.0d is alot better than the 1.6d.

I had the 1.6 s40 for a while as a company car. Lovely car in terms of looks and toys etc. My main issue with it was the pathetically small boot with poor access and the lack of room in the back. It was also underpowered for overtaking compared to the avensis I had previously. Probably wouldn't buy one myself but I did enjoy driving it.

D2 / D3 models didn't come in until Model Year 11, which started production around mid-May 2010, so you are probably looking at 1.6d (109 bhp) or 2.0d (136bhp) models. Even after the model year change the D3 is very thin on the ground as they put all those engines in to the new S60.

1.6d with the 5 speed gearbox is a bit sluggish (was out run by a Trafic 115ps model in one) but the 2.0d is pretty nippy.

There is always the option of importing one, which probably works out cheaper than buying local. UK specification though isn't as high as Irish specification for the equivalent vehicle. MY10 vehicles in Ireland and older have full leather in the SE (minumin specification to buy) but it was cloth in the UK. Look at SE LUX models, or SE with full leather if buying across the water.

If you do go for the 1.6d, make sure it's been serviced on the button (every 20,000km) as they don't take kindly to running over scheduled intervals.

I bought a 11 S40 D2 a few weeks ago. The new 1.6 diesel is far better than the old < 10 1,6. Feels much quicker. Overall, very happy. Engine is very quiet and refined as well, much more than my previous insignia.

Thanks everyone. Certainly a bit to think about. It looks like I'm after the 2.0d with the SE spec. I know its not the biggest car in the world, particularly when it comes to boot space, but it suits my needs.

The S40 is based on the Focus so rear leg room and access to the boot are always going to be tight.

I was viewing a 2007 2l diesel tonight. They had a couple of 1.6 too and the guys in the dealers reckon the 1.6 is a bit soft and doesn't age well. The 2l would probably be the way forward but I didn't get to take them for a test drive today as traffic was mental and I didn't get over there till just before closing time. Seem like nice cars.

Had a 05 2ltr as a company, put loads of miles on think it was just over 160k no major issues, always thought it was heavy on diesel though to other cars I had seem to remember that it had a small fuel tank, think 50 litre, can't remember the spec but was well equipped. Even had somebody crash into me, can confirm it was safe

Would you consider a D5? As rare as they are, they have a lot more character than the 2l. Much more fun to drive!
