OP ...search online for a wedding photographer that you like and get along with .... most will travel to you (some might charge extra ...but most won't)

know what you want from a photographer and what you expect to get from them (ie. a DVD with the images and full rights to reproduce/reprint)

    +1 to this!

I wish I had done this... Just got married in Sligo... Paid over 2k for the photographer.. Don't know enough about photographers and their images... But just found out I only get the album...and no rights to the images/negatives to show friends etc... I woulda thought we would have received all the images at the end but apparently not! Had I known this before hand or known to ask these questions I never would have chosen this photographer..... I spose I was silly to just assume we would get all the images on a disc after :-(.

its not if you are getting a quality photographer - most people don't see the amount of work that goes into wedding photography - the countless meetings prior to the wedding, the "recon" on the church, the venue, local parks/gardens, for ideal/unique spots to get photos, the days of work post-processing images, if the couple are getting an album/photobook, the presentation/layout of said album - you can't simply throw the images in randomly - there must be a sequence/flow to them.

Were paying over €2K to two guys - for our wedding in August, I know them both personally and professionally - were getting the images on a DVD ONLY - I work as a professional photographer (not weddings but other stuff).....so if you want quality, it sometimes comes at a price, I know these guys and trust them to do a quality job.

I feel 2k is a lot of money but as you say if you want quality sometimes you have to pay for it. However, we only met our photographer once before the wedding... Not countless times. And once after to chose the photos we want in the album. There was absolutely no outside photos of local parks/gardens etc.... As it lashed on our day. (the photographer is from that area so she knows the church and area well anyway). And there was only one of her not 2! So while your money will be divided between 2 people... Our one person gets the lot.

That aside we are very happy with the quality images. I just assumed we would get a disc or key after with the images. There are about 500-600 images and we only get an album with 100 photos superimposed onto an album with no negatives whatsoever. I'm just very disappointed as I would love to email some photos to friends overseas who couldn't make the wedding. I shouldn't have assumed... But if I'd have known this I would have got a different photographer. :(

    well thats good!
but of course if you want a print of any of the photographs, you'll have to go back to the photographer and lash out more money, in my opinion it's nothing short of gouging people that are already under huge financial pressure. For 2K I'd be expecting them all on a DVD.

Unfortunately some of the so-called professions think that our broken economy has nothing to do with them.

Anyway it's a heads-up for anyone that are negotiating with a photographer, to ask whether the full high res photographs are included with unrestricted usage or not.

Totally agree... I just would have thought for that money we would have received the images. She said she would be charging €10 per photo (the normal 6x4 size). And if we want 200 images on disc will be another 300-400€ and there's 600 Images altogether.... I'd actually begrudge handing that money over to her....

Moral of the story.... Always ask questions before and never assume.

We've booked Melissa Mannion for a wedding in Leitrim.

She's on the pricey side, but definitely worth it.
She did a friend's wedding before (also a photographer) and the photos were stunning.

I would recommend George Kelly. (GeorgeKellyphotography.com). He did a friends wedding in Sligo earlier this year and he was great. He's from Dublin but travels.
