Termination of contract, followed by contract

Has anybody received this from their school/employer yet? I'm on an RPT and my principal has said to all RPT staff who are returning to expect a termination of contract in the post. A new contract will be issued in September.

This was supposed to happen in our school last year for the first time, but it didn't. My questions are:

    1) What benefit does the DoES receive from doing contracts this way now?

    2) What are the contractual consequences for me/RPT staff from this change?

    Grma/Thanks.

I'm open to correction on this but if they are terminating contracts and issuing new ones in September, you may end up having a break in service and could be waiting longer to get your next incremental increase.
Regarding what benefits the DES get, I'm not really sure. Small monetary benefit possibly? My advice is to get onto the union about it. It sounds a bit odd being honest about it

Not necessarily. Contracts typically run from Sept 1st to 31st August unless you start later in the school year. So a contract for the following year should run straight on from the last one. I would imagine that it's a tightening up on administration, perhaps someone brought a case when they lost their job due to cuts on the basis that they did not receive any termination notice and as a result felt some entitlement to hours the following year, in a chance your arm scenario.

I know PRPT teachers in Roscommon VEC where I work used to get letters in the post around May each year saying that their contracts expired on 31st August and there was no guarantee that they would be renewed (or something to that effect), even though these teachers knew they were back the following year anyway, due to their subjects or because the school wasn't losing any teachers, but the conclusion in my school was that it was an arse covering measure should anything happen that cuts needed to be made or perhaps a redeployment happened (which wasn't all that common, but more common in VECs than Dept schools).

I have no idea if they still get those letters, most of my friends are CID now so it doesn't apply to them. I must ask at work when we go back.
