10yo New holland tractor. Was doing a bit of topping the other evening and was nearly finished when pto lever started slipping out of gear on it's own and a little grinding. Stopped tractor and started again, engaged pto again, off I go and a minute later same crack. Parked in up for the night. Tractor would not be worked hard on pto by any stretch of the imagination. Didn't get a chance to check play on the shaft in and out. Obviously something a bit worn or needs adjusting.....any ideas? Will take it to local lad to have a look.....

Is there a lever for changing it from 540 to 540e or 1000rpm? Check that!

I don't know the tractor in question but if it is a cable going down to engage it there may be a little stretch in the cable. I would disconnect it underneath and manually engage it for a test.. if that worked just adjust the cable!

used to have 7610 and the PTO use to turn off too. eventually lost all drive thought it was the clutch but turned out to be hydlulic pump to drive the PTO. its tucked in behind the RHS wheel. if its an older ford based NH it might be that. straight forward to change if a little awqward, gears were worn.

This prob scared the sh1te out me before. You just need to adjust the 540/100 selector cable and lock it more into the 540rpm gear.

Ours does this occasionally too, we have a 3 speed selector on ours. Follow the cable down from the speed selector in the cab if you have one. Ends on a little metal clip to the left had side of the PTO shaft at the back. Get a triple K tine or similar and just prize it back or forth to the correct position, doesn't take too much pressure and does the trick for us.

Or if unlike us you do things correctly, fix the stretch in the cable that's actually causing the issue

Hi just checking this tread now.

Thanks for all replies. I think yes it's a cable problem as I can keep lever pushed back with my hand and it's not forcing to get back into neutral. I've left it with a lad to have a look at it.
