yahoo wiping inactive IDs

Anyone that hasn't logged into their yahoo mail in over a year will lose it on July 15th.

Am I missing something or is this not potentially handing over access to all sorts of people Accounts???

Let the WHOIS scrapping begin, I can see A LOT of "Forget Password" buttons been pressed.

Yahoo responds

The company plans to introduce a 30-day period between an account deactivation and its subsequent recycling. During that time, emails received in the account will be met with a response that the account no longer exists. Yahoo says it will also unsubscribe inactive accounts from "commercial emails such as newsletters and email alerts" and notify "merchants, e-commerce sites, financial institutions, social networks, email providers, and other online properties" that the account will soon be recycled. This passes some of the responsibility to online providers, which may now be forced to set up safeguards to protect Yahoo accounts from being misused.

Me thinks they couldn't care less once it gets a few people back using there services. The (more than likely) bad publicity from a hoard of password resets may have the opposite affect.

Should've just created a new domain. NotYahoo or something.

Could this not be taken as a break of data protection and "hacking" since I did not give Yahoo rights over other services I used a @yahoo address to sign up to.

Ahh, that makes sense now. Yahoo wants to free up unused accounts to fulfill the wishlist.
