Outstanding actor and screen presence. Very very sad and shocked to hear about his passing. He seemed like a very down to earth personality who shied away from the media and self promotion.

After I seen the very first episode of the Sopranos 13 years ago I've followed his career closely and have even watched films simply on the basis of his name being in the credits.

    RIP.

I know that most people will think that the Sopranos was his best role but honestly I think his performance in Where the Wild Things Are is by far his most moving work.

This is very sad, he was only 51 which makes it even sadder. A really great actor and seemed like a stand up guy too.

    Ah crap!

I first saw him in True Romance but of course it's The Sopranos that he will be best remembered for. He was excellent in Killing Them Softly last year as well.

    So long, James.

I didn't realise he was so young. Always thought he was a bit older.

Wow, RIP James Gandolfini. Yes he will forever be Tony Soprano to a lot of us but I'll never grow tired of any of his scenes in True Romance, he made the most out of what was effectively a 'minor henchman' role. My favourite part..."Alabama would you twirl around for me...no, the other way..."

    51, way too young.

The Sopranos is, for me, is the pinnacle of television greatness. I cannot believe it, I really can't. Devastating.

A fantastic character actor with a truly magnetic screen presence, he will be missed

I was going to say he frequently ran the risk of being typecast - but even though he always worked with a familiar foundation (unfortunately, that distinctively breathless enunciation of his now takes on a tragic new resonance), he had a remarkable ability for lending his performances different emotional dimensions. He could comfortably fit into a comedy (loved how he slotted into the wacky farce of In The Loop), drama, gangster film, family film, everything in between. And he was never less than a distinctive, passionate screen presence, even in glorified cameos like Zero Dark Thirty. He brought credible humanity to the aggressively cold and clinical Killing Me Softly, and it was much needed.

Whether as a supporting character actor or the lead in a hugely influential television show, James Gandolfini always had my full attention, and that to me signals a one of a kind actor.

    Gutted. Genuinely gutted. R.I.P.

I’m currently re-watching The Sopranos (for the third time) and was only saying to someone yesterday what a force of nature he was.

If you have never seen his appearance on Inside the Actors Studio then do so now. A very humble man.

Don't forget his appearance in the much underrated "The Man Who Wasn't There".

Hugely underrated & overlooked performance. His first "Don't say that. How could you say that?" in that scene gets me every time.

    RIP

Two roles I really liked him in even though the films were panned by critics was in The Mexican and Surviving Christmas :o he stole the show in both, did well with the comedic roles

Of course he will be remembered for playing one of tv's most iconic and legendary characters in Tony Soprano

I think "the man who wasn't there" was the first thing I saw him in, thought he was excellent. Also as the prick of a colonel in Last Castle with Robert Redford - it was revealing how such a physically big guy could play such a small and unlikable character. For some reason I put off watching the sopranos until I did a marathon a few years back and wow, he really was one of the cornerstones of that show.

Major loss to cinema, he could have only gotten better and more "characterful"!

He was great in '8mm' too. A real despicable character.

I liked him in Crimson Tide, grilling the newbie about actors in various submarine themed movies.

He was seriously one of the most watchable actors plying the trade today. No matter how crap the film he was in, his performance would no doubt be one of the highlights.

The acting world has lost a true giant.

    RIP
