Legally Changing Your Name Questions

I really want to change my last name, it's 10 letters long and hard as hell to pronounce.

It always been causing me problems.

I know they have a deed poll service in the high court in dublin, is that the only way to do it ?

I heard you can get a lawyer to do it, is that true ?

How hard is it to transition to a new surname, and what institutions do you need to tell besides:

    Banks
    Utility Providers
    Passport
    Driving License
    Employer

    Thanks

I chose one that starts with the same letter and is 1 syllable as opposed to 4 like mine.

I found a list online of american surnames and chose one I liked

Are you open to the idea of AH coming up with a new surname for you OP?
We could knock mileage out of this.

How about Flipflops as a second name? Or Silage? Or you go all retro porno on with and be like Rex Longwang or something like that.

    Be creative brah!:pac:

Everyone on boards will donate €5 to a children's charity if you allow AH to pick your new surname.

Come on, you'd have to be a real heartless b*****d not to do this for all the poor sick orphans.

A guy called in to the Four Courts to have his name changed by deed poll. As it was a quiet day the girl at the counter said that she would fill out the form for him. She asked him what his current name was, to which he replied: "Sean Bollix". Laughing the girl said: "I can see why you want to change that. What do you want to change it to". He replied: "Jim Bollix".

You should change your last name to What.
The comical situations you'll find yourself in would be well worth it.

You: My name is Billy What.
    Woman: What?
    You: Exactly

    Utter priceless.

I changed me name by deed poll, took feckin ages, cause I had to go through a process of "repeat and reputation " before getting the new name, where I basically lived as the new name.
I have since learned, ya don't have to go through this, I just think my solicitor was a lazy sh!te.
It cost me a lot more than what I have heard other people getting it for too.
But you do have to change everything over to your new name. Hardest thing being your passport.
Start with your bank account, bring in a deed poll copy to the bank and get them to change your name. Then with a new statement you're on your way.
Change your PPS number next, this will be linked to more stuff than you realise. Just "lose " your current passport and apply for a new one or wait until it expires.

I changed my last name..but when my step dad adopted me, so that's a bit different. I was delighted...was alot of hassle during..with all the papers..and after..with all the "ID" proof and stuff.
    So worth it though.

Does that mean you exist with both names for a period then?

I think it would feel well weird. It's what other people have called you and you've called yourself for x number of yearsIt would take some getting used to at least.

You'd be surprised how quick you adjust..and everyone around you...especially for a last name. I expect first name would be different.

Dublin Trans Peer Support Group are now almost experts at this ;-)

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

As ateacher we have about 2 kids a year whos surname changes.

loads of remarriage & adoption going on.

you don't actually NEED to go through all the legal stuff though, other than on the passport & Drivers licence.

We all Know a Liam whos Passport says William, a Liz who's really a Elizabeth etc.

if you want to be known as Tharg Earthslayer, then that's cool, go ahead.

getting a credit card, you can have whatever the hell you like on it.

I know a bloke who had "Lord Moore" on his. Always used it for paying deposits in Hotels and claims it got him manys an upgrade......

set up a "trading as" bank account with your new name on it.
