I can't run the driver for a HP 3055A deskjet printer. I have Ubuntu 12.04. No Windows or Mac. I downloaded the driver and the digital cert from hp open source site but it won't run at all. Ideas anyone please?

If you only need to print, try adding it manually using the ghostcript Deskjet 640C driver. Most HP all in ones use an antiquated version of PCL that that extremely common and very old 640C used. This is how I got my 110a and 210a Photosmarts to work on various OSs.

edit: Actually seeing some suggestions that it supports PCL5 also, which there should be a generic driver for.

This won't get you the fancy printing features of the official driver, but for normal printing its fine.

Thanks MYOB. I can print ok with the USB lead but I can't scan to desktop. After a long wait the file started to run but then it said there was corrupt characters in there and warned me not to carry on
so I deleted it. This happened twice.

Have you tried Simple Scan, included with most linux OS? Works with every distro I have used.
I found this on Ubuntu forums too:

OP, it should work out-of-the-box without any extra drivers.

Have you tested it first (the linux way) or you started with downloading drivers (the windows way)?

I've never used the scanner drivers on my HP units, I've used the scan interface on their internal web server.

Thanks everyone. Lately discovered I had pre installed software with Ubuntu 12.04 which gets me printing, but so hope with the scanner and my level of technothickitude can't cope with the linux advice pages!

How do you try to scan? The button on the device won't work. You have to use something like Simple Scanning or XSane.

What hplip version do you have?

Some info about your device and hplip here: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/deskjet_aio/deskjet_3050a_j611_series.html
