Hi, my neighbour who's 68 has a private pension and wife works 3 day a week got a letter four weeks ago to say there card was been withdrawn and had to fill in forms to show what they earn weekly, so received a letter on Monday saying that there join earnings was €360 over the cut of point and medical card will be taken away.
Three weeks ago my neighbour suffered a mild stroke and brain hemorrhage and he's wife had to give up work to look after him, he's weekly medication comes to €100+ he has an MRI scan next week and other scans to come in the next few weeks.
They both don't drive so have to get taxis everywhere hospitals doctors etc. He can get the drug payment scheme but with all the scans/doctor vists to come in the further he needs the medical card.
So there going to appeal in next few days, is there anybody who could help or give tips on what we should puy down in the appeal, we've a letter from the doctor, a letter from the chemist with list of all medication and prices. Any help would be great.sorry if a bit long winded Thank you.

Appeal grounds1)change in circumstances ie. one no longer working
    2)cost of meds
    3)medical condition causing hardship
4)cost of travel to and from hospital appointments

Thats about all the HSE will take into account

joint earnings was €360 over the cut-off point
They should not have had a medical card at all based on this alone. They had an income of at least €660pw.

In 2009 my father received a seizure which has left him severely brain damaged, we received a 10 year medical card from our local medical centre has he is dependant for rest of his life and in a nursing home, However we received a letter few weeks back to re access his income, which only receives a pension but this goes on nursing home fees, we received a gp visit card on tuesday, I am furious to what this country has come to for a person to work all his life, I would advise your neighbour to get every letter from doctors, consultants etc show them taxi fare receipts, their esb bills everything that they spend that is what we have done and our appeal is gone through, we went to our local health centre where the girl was very helpful and put the appeal through to Dublin, Dublin is now in control of medical cards not our local health centres. Hope this helps!

First thing to do is to get a Drugs Payment Scheme card. Anyone can get this regardless of means, and it means you pay a maximum of €144 per month for medication.

hey your neighbour wants it all, a private pension and his missus working part time, they are not entitled to a medical card, they are rolling in the dosh and probably have not got a mortgage or kids to clothe, never mind put through school, and they want a medical card. If they are that much over the limit , then pay for the health care, they are wealthier than most folks, get real !!

And that is nett income after deduction of USC, PRSI & Tax. Plus an allowance for wife's travel to work!!!

Cant say anything on here anymore. Lets all take pity on the poor neighbour and be good sheep. Story of our lives in this country.

Medical cards are means tested and the state feel that the can afford not to have one, just like any other family in the state.

With regards his medication, he shouldn't have to pay more than 144 per month.

If his situation did change well then he should see about getting reassed.

Not being a sheep but if the guy worked all of his life and paid taxes then imo he is entitled to a medical card. We all know there are people out there who never worked a day in their lives, who are screwing the system left right and center and are somehow able to be in the bookies all day and pub all night with medical cards but a pensioner who more than likely paid takes for 40+ years gets shafted by the government who wants to give it all to billionaire bondholders.

Their circumstances have changed, they should reapply with a letter explaining all that has happened.

Am I right in thinking he will be awarded one when he reaches 70 anyway so it may just be for a 2 year period that he has no card.
