    Hi all,

As I have always built my own PCs, i'm at a loss when a buddy asks me for a recommendation for a store bought PC.

    All he needs are:
PC & monitor. I can give him any peripherals such as keyboard & mouse etc.

What he needs are a machine that will work as the workhouse in a family with 2 kids under ten (light gaming, watch videos etc).

    Budget is 600e

    thanks in advance

Bonus points if the bricks & mortar store is close to blanarchstown

Once you say gaming you cant really get away with store bought in ireland though especially for under 600 as you would end up with a gtx620 of intel hd graphics.

By light gaming you mean Candy Crush on Facebook, or Battlefield 3?

PC world's website has lots on offer but its impossible to do comparison's. i really need a shortlist of machines.

as long as the machines have pci-e slots then i guess they can always be upgraded later (power permitting) so it sounds like the price will force us down into the integrated road.

light gaming will mean indie games mostly: FTL, minecraft, don't starve, prison architect. Would ideally also like to handle emulation from snes/megadrive/amiga era too

dell equivalent (for price comparison) is unfortunately pushing me here:

I would definitely recommend to go this route. Maybe you can build it for him? It would crush any brick and mortar build for the same price, literally every component is of a higher spec :). This will last longer too.

HVVS or komplett. no matter what the price, if we buy (even a prebuilt one with nominated components), i think i will be on the hook for the warrantly. I really don't want that (don't think my buddy wants that either).

i even think that the extra 20% is worth it from his point of view. 2 young kids, they both work, they ferry the kids to sports, their downtime is precious. for sure they don't want a 2 week gap in pc ownership while they return a part to komplett (or whoever).

I'm grateful for the price comparison (good to know what the alternatives are).
but local warranty is a must.

having said that, last machine was a dell and they had excellent customer service experience. (dead PSU, engineer with replacement at their house 30 hours after call was made).

With PC World, everything bar the most very very very basic thing, goes back to the KnowHow, which I'm pretty sure is in the UK. Turn around would be a week or two, all going well.

if thats the case then it only leaves Dell !!!! are bricks and mortar really that uncompetitive? would have presumed that warranty/customer service was there raison d'etre/?

There are some decently priced AIO's and XPS desktops on the Dell Uk Outlet.

Might be a bit too big for Parcel Motel. I used deliverme.ie 2 years ago to get a laptop from them.

It's €20 but I was pleased with the service.
