Email and web pages not working correctly

    Hi all,

I have a few problems with downloading email and on certain web pages like Facebook.

    I have 2 systems - 1 is Vista SP2 and the 2nd is Win7 SP1.
    Both systems have same problems.

I connect to the internet via a router - and usually wirelessly but sometimes via a lead. I am in range of the router giving me "5 bars" and am also in range of a weak network which sometimes the systems connect to.

When i am connected to my own network i find i cannot load certain web pages like Facebook, it appears as almost empty page with blue hyperlinks to the left side. This is same for BBC website but RTE.ie loads perfectly - quickly and with all pictures appearing.

Also when connected to my own network, Outlook 2007 will check only a few of the email accounts i check for. Sometimes when i check just those failed accounts manually it works - downloads email then sometimes it doesnt.

It had been suggested that the web and email problems are due to firewall / anti virus programs - i have removed all and it makes no difference at all.

However, when i connect to a 3rd party network, all the problems are not there - both before and after firewall / anti virus programs have been removed.

Does anyone have any tips or a solution to the problems?

    Thanks everyone.

contact your broadband supplier, as the problem seems to be from their end or your router.

    Is your router firewalled?

If RTE.IE works then it's unlikely to be an ISP problem , or if it is it would affect everyone and be fixed soon

don't forget to check for malware too.

    clear cache

try a different browser (firefox uses its own dns cache , opera mini gets the opera sever to retreive pages)

hi cap'n, i downloaded Opera but not Opera Mini tho, and the BBC website which failed previously on my own wireless router did work - showed pictures and loaded quickly, however, facebook remains as before - blue hyperlinks to left etc.

    Anymore ideas?

    Hi,

If you know that this issue is not concerned with firewall, anti-virus or broad band then proceed on way of PST's data analysis in Outlook. In case, your PST folder is full then apply splitting mechanism to get Outlook performance back. To check the process of splitting a PST file:

That 2GB limit only applied to outlook 2002 and earlier

and there any amount of free and opensource tools to manipulate them.
the simpliest being to empty the deleted items / recycle bin

this was the drastic (as in loose the email that was the straw that broke the camels back)

Outlook 2007 has a very large limit for PSTs , it's too large, you should really archive older emails to separate pst files (per year or per account) so less damage is done if that "all your eggs in one basket" file gets corrupted in future. Also makes recovery waaayyyy faster.

and a reminder microsoft don't support pst's on network drives

again have you checked for malware, patched windows up to date, emptied the IE cache

i did do a ScanPST.exe test and it came up with errors but i did not get to see what they were and do not know where to look for the log. Outlook has over the last few months been doing a Data check from time to time but all tests came up ok. There are quite a few emails in my PST - the backup done for the ScanPST exercise was 275mb.

I moved my internet cache for MSIE from C drive to E as E is my data drive (same physical HDD however) and have emptied the E drive cache, not sure if there is the original cache still on C drive.

I have used anti malware and all seems ok. I install all Windows and other updates which Windows Update and each programs' own update procedures give me, however, i have been offered from Windows Update over the last few weeks some really old updates from as far back as 2010, i did install them.

The local computer came out with his Mac and connected wirelessly and cabled to my router and all my trouble websites loaded quickly and no problems.

I came across some .fpb files in Users/.....appdata/....temp folder - a google search says related to flash player and can be deleted - the folder names are a string of numbers and letter bit like a Windows activation code - upon clicking into the folder there is the fpb file; i went back to folder string name and deleted only to be warned it was being shared with someone - i do not share data with anyone. Have deleted a few but have many many of them into the thousands perhaps. Can i delete them, but how can i find out who they are being shared with - a look at Shared folders shows nothing is being shared.

I leave my emails on the isp's server after downloading to Outlook 2007. One day a few weeks back Outlook was requiring me to download all of them again. I did as it was only way to get that day's emails into Outlook. I am currently going through them and deleting them and then deleting them from Deleted foder and then Compacting the PST.
