Autumn or spring calving?

    Hi folks,

A few years ago we were calving almost all year round and started compacting the spread by holding the late calving spring cows til autumn and the late calving autumn cows til spring. We've now got it down to half sept/oct and half feb/mar. I'd like to get the all the cows calving at the one time by bulling the replacements for one group.

So what are the advantages and disadvantages of each season?

    are you milking or suckling?

If suckling at what age do you sell the calves?

Suckling. We sell everything except a few replacements in the autumn

Will you be holding on to any calves longer in the future? Also what are facilities like?

Prefer spring calving myself, mainly because it's simpler.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.
