    Usually they work like this.

You show up at the allotted time. Singles, strokes, min handicap 10, max 16 usually (ish, depends on the club). Gross prize the main thing to go for, also net prizes sometimes. Totally random what scores win, so don't go out with any preconceived ideas....I won one once with an 84 when I was off 10....had gone home assuming I was nowhere near, had to hightail it back to get my lovely piece of caaaaavan crystal :D

Cheers Cod - I can't imagine I'll be near the prizes but couldn't turn down a chance to play Baltray on a summer Saturday for €30! :D

So, Singles, Strokes and everyone off 'levels' correct?

Baltray usually have fine pieces of silverware for their scratch cups. And for any scratch cup there absolutely any score can win it, depending on the day. If the wind picks up you certainly won't be far at all from winning if you're playing near to your handicap.

Played my first one of these in Greenore last weekend. (Off 13 currently, usually 12)
40mph wind by the coast, slightly hungover after a club shotgun the night before.

    Bad idea!!

My clubmate entered with me (10) and was in foul form! He started with a bogey then a par. The 3rd, 4th and 5th are into the wind, so he played a lay up with his 2nd on 3. Someone else played his ball, he went back and dropped etc, ended with a quadruple bogey 8. Played the next 4 holes in unbelieveably bad form and had 2 more bogeys and 2 pars.

He hit a great drive on the 8th, but didn't put any height on his second, trying to cut across some bad marshland to the green, had to drop again. Decided he was done and stopped marking his card.

Even with a 6 here, he would only have been +9 overall.
He then birdied 9 and 10, and parred 11 and 12 before we called it a day.
+7 for 12 holes (With someone having nicked his ball, costing at least 3 of those shots).

Went online that evening, and 84 won the gross!
    Competition scratch score was 76!

Moral of the story - Play out - you never know!!
