As above i need to complete this course the sooner the better and would like to complete in one day. If anyone knows of an upcoming course please let me know.
    Also I would like to also enquire about the nursing studies award. I have already completed 5 of the 8 modules that are part of this by completing the healthcare support award. I have completed in the last year alone that are part of this award;

    care support
    care skills
    communications
    work experience
    health and safety at work
as well as gaining the fetac level 5 award in healthcare support by completing 3 other modules all done in less than a year.

If I complete the other 3 modules does that entitle me to the nursing studies fetac level 5 award?

    with thanks,
    Michéal Kirwan

    Hi Michéal,

You can complete the remaining modules for Nursing Studies (looking at what you've noted below you would appear to need Anatomy & Physiology and Introduction to Nursing) based on this info from FETAC. However, if you wish to apply to a Nursing degree using this award, all the modules need to be completed in one sitting as far as I know. See here and here. But someone who knows more might confirm. The colleges may also specify certain modules they require for entry to Nursing. Don't forget you can apply as a mature student also. There are more places for mature students than FETAC, albeit the pool of mature students is greater.

Servisource do one day NVCI training. It doesn't list dates but you could contact them to see when they are running it next. I did this course in college and found it to be very interesting.

yes the anatomy and physiology, introduction to nursing, human growth and development and biology to do nursing but for nursing studies i need the first three i mentioned. to applt as a mature student i need these four done too. it makes no logical sense to spend a year at this when i have 5 of the 8 modules done in the last year im just qualified and it took less than a year. I want to now if i do these three can i get that award to seeing as they would be all done?
as for servisource i rang them today they have to ring me back.
    thank you wild rosie

You don't need to have them done to apply as a mature student. The only requirement is that you're over 23 and then you do the aptitude test. I've applied this year and don't have those modules. You only need them if you're applying with FETAC. The private colleges do those modules individually, if you google the module they come up. But if you're applying using FETAC you need to do all the modules in one sitting i.e. you'd have to do safety & health, work experience, communications etc as well. If you look at those links above it says they have to be done in one sitting. I think this requirement is peculiar to nursing. If you're on facebook, there's a group called rollercoster nursing/midwives and there's loads of info about applying as a mature student.

i want to apply to dcu and they require these modules and that aptitude test. ive the email from them and they have maybe 5 spots for mature students

You only need the modules to apply as a FETAC applicant. There are no educational requirements to apply as a mature student. Have a read of this http://www.nursingboard.ie/GetAttachment.aspx?id=f5d446ed-2c40-47ff-bf34-5323f898d853 it's explains it all. There are much more mature code places than FETAC so you need to apply for both. Read this http://www.dcu.ie/prospective/deginfo.php?classname=BNGN on the DCU website also.

rosie youve been very kind to me thank you. youll be fine ill say a prayer for you! are you a mature student yourself or can i ask?

Yes I'm a mature student. I sat the aptitude test back in April and we got the results two weeks ago. Offers are out Friday fortnight. This is my second year applying. You're welcome for the help, it's a bit of a minefield, especially as its so competitive. Last year I was clueless about the whole process and if it wasn't for kind people here and on Facebook I'd probably still be clueless.

It's tricky enough. The first section is a skills and experience questionnaire. There's 68 questions on that I think. It asks you about your experience caring for people, your attitude to education and work etc. There's also questions along the lines of would you rather be a manager or be managed, that sort of thing. The next section is verbal comprehension. You get a number of passages and statements and you have to say of the statements are true, false or cannot say based on the information. That section is tricky. Then there's a maths section. You get questions like joe had ten apples and he gave 20% to Mary, how many did he have left. Some of these can be difficult, especially if maths isn't your strong point. Last section is job simulation. You are given passages describing a scenario you might come across as a student nurse and you have to decide which action you would take. The timing for verbal, maths and job scenario are very tight and a lot of people didn't get them finished. This is the booklet we were given before the test to prepare and it explains it much better than I can http://www.nursingboard.ie/GetAttachment.aspx?id=03ed3df8-75c4-4882-b989-36e61ab1c6ec You can also find the 2012 one on google and you'll see how the test has changed from last year. I personally found the maths easier this year but I know a lot of people didn't. I think the job scenarios were harder this year from what I can remember.

it sounds testing to be honest

It is but it's very doable with preparation. You can practice the verbal and the maths and your work experience from your HCA course will be very helpful for the job scenarios especially is you did any in a hospital. I did a preparation day back in February and it was a massive help. I improved my score a lot from last year so it can be done. For me, it was easier to do well in the test than get 8 distinctions in the FETAC.

i got the 8 distinctions in the fetac and i know ill have to do the test but i want to do it to get into nursing and i will do that prep test.tell me about where you work and how you find it?

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 585 ✭✭✭WildRosie

I did the prep day with career services. It was €150 if I remember correctly. I found it to be very good and they gave lots of practice questions. Well done on your 8 distinctions but be sure to check with the individual colleges if you'll need to redo the core modules (communications, work experience, s&h etc) as some require that all the modules are done in one go. Better to check before shelling out for the individual modules and then having to redo the whole thing again.
