Last weekend I finally moved cattle out of a field that was gone to strong. Last night I put fertilizer on it with the intent of making silage before the first august. It is covered in buttercups with some docs still green but started to seed.

What spray should I use to get the cleanest silage? Traditionally the field has had a good clover content.

Any spray I've read info on says that if they are close to seed then it's too late to spray.
Maybe top it really tight and spray after the cut.

Don't top it. It will set it back too much. Just give it enough fert and the grass should smother the weeds.

If the cattle have grazed it tight enough topping will only be cutting the unpalatable grass and weeds which is what you need. Docks anyway will regrow and you need to wait till the leaves are about 6 inches long before spraying, I can't remember for sure but it will say on the can. D50 for docks I suppose, not sure if it will kill buttercups too. The main thing seems to be spraying at the right stage for a particular weed.
