They say they increase power, improve mpg etc but do they actually work? I seen one advertised on here or done deal its 130e and was thinking of maybe trying it out but would like to no if its worth it at all?

    Anyone any experience with them?

Generally there not worth a ****.

Most just fool the o2 sensor.

Get it mapped by a tuner if you want actual results

Some of these so called tuning boxes are fake, all they are is a resistor in a box.

As said a remap from a reputable tuner is the way to go.

What type of car is it for?

I remember one Australian show bought a 1L dihatsu charade and tested it without and with loads of different ebay jobbies both dyno and mpg runs and most dont sweet feck all some even mildly lowered power and mpg

Has anyone used the Bluefin devices from Superchips? I would assume a reputable tuner company wouldnt release a resistor in a box? Could be wrong though

I got one, not a racechip for my is220d and it made a huge difference, second gear was always a waste of time but the box helped a lot and mpg increased, it took a bit of fiddling to get the right setting but when I did it was worth it.
Still have it but the car is gone think it works on a lot of turbo diesels.

tbh that was just plain stupid. Obviously there wont be anything of a difference with a 1l charade. The best gains you will see are on turbo'd engines.
As mentioned though I would go for a remap - they check the car out before and after so you know its a thorough job

    Glad I asked first!

I was actually going to order 1 and I just thought I would put it up here and see what others have thought of them.

It was for a 1.6 tdci focus

Had one for a tdci focus I had years ago. Made a nice difference but the unit died at one stage and wouldn't connect to the car. Superchips replaced it without issue.

Can I ask what exactly the resistor in a box would do or meant to do?

At a very high level, all electronics operate on the principal of voltage levels to decide on binary output or logic decision. The resistor changes a voltage value and hence the ECU does something different based on that input.

Trying to get a Superchip Bluefin for my 1.6 Passat TDI, they tell me it's nearly done but no ETA.

The remap they offer gives a increase in BHP of ~35% (103bhp up to 144bhp) on stock for my Passat so would be a massive difference to what I have now. In general the maps they do are highly regarded.

Regarding the Bluefin device, they offer much higher power output on turbo diesels.
Question is has anyone used one on a non-turbo petrol?

What a ways we've come, when you can get the equivalent of a Power Commander V for a 1600 diesel Volkswagen. Whatever next - a twinscrew Roots blower for a Renault Fluence?? ;)

It is a tall claim and impressive if true, I'll keep you posted ;). But here's a link to the power curve difference according to superchip:

I've had the benefit of seeing the results of these and the likes of these on a dyno. Nothing has ever come close to a custom map, all these are just a generic base map and mostly poor maps too. They just tend to up the fuel.

I think it really depends on your application. I mean if your using a generic map designed for standard spec car on a hardware tuned car with cat back exhaust, bigger turbo and induction kits it will cause negative results.

Using the same map on a standard version of that car I.e. the way the map was designed, it should have different results. This is why good remap providers have specific maps for cars at different stages of tuning e.g. focus st, impreza.

Superchips claim better fuel economy on most of their maps, the numbers I guess are debatable, however I can't imagine a remap provider as reputable as superchips being wrong across the board.

The thing is though every car reacts differently to tuning, so any gereneric map is never going to be 100%
