New bike advice

Hi folks, I'm looking at getting a new bike but I'm not sure where to start. I currently have an old mountain bike that I got for nothing a few years ago which I use to cycle to the train station (only 1.5K distance) and the occasional weekend cycle, its slow and heavy and not fun to cyle at all. I was wondering if I spent the funds on a new bike whether I might cycle from Dunboyne to the City over the summer months in the nice weather....

I'm assuming that the right bike will make all the difference to the difficulty/easiness of a cycle? I'm afraid thought that I'll spend the money and then decide its too far & just use it to get to the train anyway.:o

So, do I get a hybrid like this?

I also found this which was in the road bikes section on eurocylces website but has straight handle bars.

My concern about road bike is the low handle bars, I'm not sure my back could take that position for a long journey.

Any advice anyone has would be much appreciated. Also if anyone here cycles that route from Dunboyne to the city I'd be interested to hear how you get across the M50 junction.

Great thanks, the road bikes you posted look good, will do as you suggested and take out for a test first.
