Clicking pedal questions - will i make damage worse by pedalling on?

So I've just started to take my bike on it's first few proper spins this summer after gathering dust in the shed and I'm starting to run into the first few technical difficulties now that I've put some mileage on it. I plan to either take a bit of a repair-it-yourself class soon, or hook up with some friends in a local cycling club so i can learn a bit more how to fiddle around and fix it myself but before then i'm worried about doing more lasting damage by continuing to cycle on it.

Basically there is a clicking noise, only when I pedal, not freewheel, it comes in more going up hill or into a headwind but it's more prominent now. It seems to be coming from the left pedal ie. when i lift off the left on each rotation the noise is not there. Perhaps if i used spd shoes it wouldn't be so bad because when i try to 'spin'/ lift out of the cycle it's not as prominent, it's particularly when i use a pressing motion all the time.

So from googling about a bit I think it might be the bearings in that particular left pedal(wellgo dual function) & that i should take it apart and grease up the ball bearings etc. I am a bit worried that it might be the bearings in the bottom bracket which i assume could be a more costly problem if i don't get it fixed.

So basically my questions are, do you think my diagnosis sounds correct from the symptoms, would a newb with half decent technical nouse be able to sort it themselves

and most importantly: if I continue to cycle on it like that for the next couple of days, (no major trips but a couple of hills) am I likely to do any lasting damage to it/make it irreparable??? I am hoping to continue to use it as a run around for the next couple of busy days before i really tackle it head on.

Any noise will wreck your head.

It might just be loose by a fraction of a thread.

    Have you tried tightening it?

Take off the pedals and grease the treads , that should solve the clicking

I solved a very similar sounding problem by tightening the pedal - it moved barely 1/8th turn but went from "driving me crazy" squeak to silent. If not that, do as blade912 says. If that doesn't fix it go to your LBS and they might have to replace BB.
